Mainstreeter basketball teams split vs. Melrose Area

In a home contest tonight, the Mainstreeter girls' basketball team won a West Central North Conference match up with Melrose Area 54-42. They've now won 10 of their last 11 games and take a 15-3 overall record to New London-Spicer this Friday night. The game is HUGE, as a win would lift them into a first-place tie in the WCCN with the Wildcats. A loss puts them two games back and dims their hopes for a three-peat as champions of the conference.

At Melrose, the Mainstreeter boys' basketball team played a hard-fought game but lost 61-52 to the conference-leading Dutchmen. Now 9-7 overall (3-3 WCCN), they host St. Cloud Cathedral on Thursday night. The Crusaders are 12-3 overall (7-1 Granite Ridge Conference) and one of the favorites in Section 5AA.

Action from the North Stars' season opener in Sauk Centre on Nov. 29...

With only one loss in their last seven outings, the Prairie Centre Area North Stars boys' hockey team appears to be peaking at the right time.

On Friday night at Detroit Lakes, the North Stars erupted with five goals and drilled the section rival Lakers 5-1. It's DL's seventh straight loss and avenges a 3-1 win by the Lakers on Dec. 8 earlier this season. Detroit Lakes is a former rival of Prairie Centre in Section 6A; they were moved out this year with a shift taking place in the boys' hockey sections and now reside in Section 8A. It's a much better fit, as they will compete against northwest Minnesota teams for playoffs.

The North Stars led 1-0 after one period and 3-1 after two were in the book. Read more on the big win in the Feb. 2 issue of the Sauk Centre Herald.

Prairie Centre Area takes an 11-7-1 record into Willmar tonight; the puck drops at 7 p.m. against the Cardinals (7-12 overall, 3-7 Central Lakes Conference). It's a huge match up, as the winner will likely have the upper hand over the other at Section 6A seeding time in February. The North Stars have won 11 of their last 16 hockey games.

A win over Willmar gives Prairie Centre a shot at the #5 seed in the 10-team section; a loss could push them down as low as #7. Wins in rematches with Morris/Benson Area on Feb. 9 on Wadena-Deer Creek on Feb. 10 will solidify their spot in the middle of the pack for playoffs. They are on track to break their 13-11-2 record of the 2007-08 season.

Top four seeds in Section 6A will most likely be held by Little Falls (14-6), Alexandria (10-8), Fergus Falls (9-7-1) and St. Cloud Apollo (8-10-1). A wildcard in the mix is Breckenridge/Wahpeton, who could end up anywhere from #5 to #7.

Both Mainstreeters basketball teams win tonight in conference play

The Mainstreeters boys' basketball team started out hot tonight in a home contest with neighboring rival Minnewaska Area, taking a 15-7 lead nine minutes into the ball game on a bucket from Dylan Kohorst.

In the early stages of the second half, they rained threes down on the Lakers and built a lead as big as 19 points. Final score: Sauk Centre 64, Minnewaska 39. They travel to Melrose next Tuesday to face the WCC-North leading Dutchmen.

Down at Albany, the Mainstreeters girls' basketball team picked up a little revenge on the Huskies; on Dec. 22, Albany won 72-68 in Sauk Centre. The Huskies led 16-7 early in the first half and had a two-point lead at the break. The Mainstreeters cranked up the defensive pressure in the second half and grabbed a four-point lead themselves with around 14 minutes left. Final score: Sauk Centre 55, Albany 50. They host Melrose Area (9-7) next Tuesday against a Dutchmen team that's lost two straight in the WCC-North.

SC-M Fusion boys' swimming and diving cooled off by Montevideo

A five-meet winning streak for the Sauk Centre-Melrose Fusion squad came to an end last night at Montevideo in a West Central Conference dual. Final score: Montevideo 101, SC-M 85.

Co-head coach James Schreiner said after the loss, "We had a chance to win some close races and did in some spots but not in others. In a meet like this we needed all the close ones to go our way, but that didn't happen. Still, the guys swam pretty well and should be proud of their efforts."

Up next: next Tuesday the Fusion travel to Sartell-St. Stephen high school for a meet against the Sabres.

Basketball, boys' hockey teams are in action on Friday night

The Prairie Centre boys' hockey team is at Detroit Lakes; the Mainstreeters girls' basketball team is at Albany; and the Mainstreeters boys' basketball team hosts Minnewaska Area.

For the Sauk Centre girls' basketball team, they'll be looking to aveng a 72-68 loss to Albany on Dec. 22.

The boys' basketball game with Minnewaska has big conference and section implications. For pure seeding purposes, the Lakers are in the south half of Section 6AA, while the Mainstreeters are in the north half. Head-to-head meetings with overall section teams still play a factor in the playoff seeding in March.

On Saturday, the Sauk Centre-Melrose wrestling team competes in the West Central Conference championships. It's the first time since the 1980s that there won't be separate North and South conference tournaments in the WCC. This year's WCC wrestling meet is at NL-S high school beginning at 9 a.m.

Also on Saturday, the North Stars hockey team travels to Willmar.

Mainstreeters drop crucial game with Albany

Final score on the home court Tuesday night: Albany 66, Sauk Centre 60. The Mainstreeters boys' basketball team saw their three-game winning streak end against the Huskies in a game that was tight the whole way. Now 8-6 overall, the Mainstreeters host Minnewaska Area in another conference game Friday.

The Sauk Centre-Melrose wrestling team lost two duals at Melrose last night, including one by only one point against Alexandria. The wrestling team now gears up for the West Central Conference tournament at NL-S high school. It will include all teams in the south and north halves of the WCC, a total of 12 programs.

The Prairie Centre North Stars tied their hockey game at Pequot Lakes and now stand 10-7-1 overall before heading to Detroit Lakes on Friday night.

Three straight for the Streeters boys' basketball team

In a home non-conference contest tonight, the Mainstreeters boys' basketball team defeated a very good Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City team 68-60 to move to 8-5 overall. The Falcons started out 7-2 through their first nine games but have now lost three straight to fall to 7-5 on the season; they're 2-2 in the West Central South Conference.

Up next: another home game next Tuesday against Albany (5-7, 1-2 West Central North Conference) in a rivalry game that should bring a full house and a great ball game for area fans.

In a road game at Minnewaska Area tonight, the Mainstreeters girls' basketball team defeated the Lakers 79-47. Up next: a tough, tough road trip to Albany next Friday night. The Huskies defeated Paynesville Area 62-47 tonight to improve to 3-2 in the WCCN and 11-5 overall.

Five in a row for the Fusion boys' swimming and diving team

A final score in last night's meet in Melrose: Sauk Centre/Melrose 107, Rocori 74.

In fantastic fashion, the Fusion team captured first place in all 12 varsity events. They now gear up for the State True Team meet at the U of M Aquatic Center on Saturday. After dropping their first three dual meet contests of the season, the Fusion team has defeated five opponents in a row. Two duals remain on the schedule before section playoffs.

In other action in Melrose, the Sauk Centre/Melrose wrestlers defeated Albany in a West Central North Conference dual. The Huskies gave up four forfeits to help tip the scales in favor of SC-M. Earning pins for SC-M were Mitch Wolbeck (120) and Antonio Barrera (HWT).

The Prairie Centre Area North Stars boys' hockey team lost 6-5 to Park Rapids/Menahga/Nevis/Walker-Hackensack-Akeley at Park Rapids last night to fall to 9-7 overall. (That team's name is a mouthful!) Prairie Centre hosts Bagley/Fosston at the Long Prairie arena on Saturday with the puck dropping at 1 p.m.

Also make note of tonight's boys' basketball game in Sauk Centre against Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City. The Falcons are 7-4 overall and on a two-game slide. The Mainstreeter girls' basketball team travels to Minnewaska Area (0-4 WCCN, 2-11).

Streeter girls' basketball blows out LP-GE

Melrose Area, who hosted tonight's game, falls to 11-5 overall, while LP-GE is now 14-1. The Thunder had reeled off 13 straight wins to start the season before dropping a Prairie Conference battle with neighboring Browerville 44-43 on Tuesday night.

Two home events take place tonight in Sauk Centre with the Mainstreeters boys' basketball team and also the Prairie Centre Area North Stars boys' hockey team.

The boys' basketball team hosts Paynesville Area in a West Central North Conference game. The Bulldogs are 2-8 overall after starting the season 2-1.

The North Stars, meanwhile, face Redwood Valley/BOLD at the Sauk Centre arena. The puck drops at 7 p.m. for the varsity match up. RV/BOLD sits at 1-14 overall; they've lost their last 11 outings. The North Stars look to add to their current two-game winning streak and currently hold an 8-6 overall record. This matches their win total from a year ago, when they finished 8-17-1.

Fusion boys' swimming and diving is state true-team bound!

At the Section 5A True Team meet on Saturday in Alexandria, the Sauk Centre-Melrose Fusion boys' swimming and diving team placed third overall. Champion Alexandria won the section title, but by placing third the Fusion were eligible for a wild card berth. They learned following the meet that they were selected to advance to the state true team meet, which is this Saturday in Minneapolis beginning at 1 p.m. at the U of M Aquatic Center.

SC-M wrestlers take 3rd at Hinckley-Finlayson invitational

The Sauk Centre-Melrose wrestlers took third place out of 10 teams on Saturday at the Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguar Invitational with 134 points. The coop team of Hinckley-Finlayson/Pine City/East Central won the event with 182.5 points, followed by runner-up Chisago Lakes with 177.5 points.

The bottom seven teams included Rush City/Braham, Trinity at River Ridge, Big Lake, Ogilvie, Spectrum, Virginia Area and Granite City Baptist. Rush City/Braham took fourth with 133 points.

Earning individual titles for SC-M were Will Funk (120) and Roosevelt Austin (182). Check out more from the event in next week's Jan. 19 issue of the Sauk Centre Herald.

No results are in yet from the Section 3A True Team boys' swimming and diving meet in Alexandria on Saturday. I do know that Alexandria won the overall title and will represent the section at the State True Team meet next weekend at the U of M Aquatic Center.

Streeter boys' basketball drubs NL-S; Streeter girls' team cools off A-C-GC

Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City's girls' basketball team was on an eight-game winning streak heading into their home game on Friday night against Sauk Centre. The Mainstreeters improved to 10-3 with a 59-47 win after leading 33-22 at the break; they shot just under a 50 percent clip from the floor (20-41) and were led by Jena Klaphake's 16 points, five assists and four three-pointers.

At New London-Spicer, the Mainstreeters boys' basketball team came home with a very satisfying 76-57 win over the Wildcats. Sauk Centre exploded for 39 first half points for a 39-25 margin at the break. Nick Adams scored 22 points, Terrence Ellis had 17, Patrick Knoblauch had 15 and Travis Rieland had 13. Great field goal shooting (53%, 26-49) and 21-of-22 shooting at the line were keys to the win.

The Sauk Centre-Melrose Fusion boys' swimming and diving team has a fair amount of momentum on their side as they prepare for the Section 3A True Team meet on Saturday. They've squared their dual meet record at 3-3 with wins over Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato, Park Rapids Area and Morris Area.

About the Fusion team's win over Park Rapids Area on Tuesday this week, co-head coach James Schreiner commented, "It was a meet for our depth to shine. The guys have come a long way since the beginning of the season. We worked hard the first month of the season and the guys are seeing it pay off. It's good to see kids rewarded for hard work."

SC-M wrestlers lose in a heartbreaker; SC-M Fusion boys' swimming and diving and Prairie Centre Area hockey both win

The Sauk Centre-Melrose wrestlers lost by the 8th criteria to Minnewaska Area tonight on the Sauk Centre mats. The 8th criteria is the most 1st-period points composite by all the wrestlers. Minnewaska had 10 and SC-M had 6 points via that criteria.

Minnewaska Area gave up 3 forfeits; SC-M gave up none.

The Fusion boys' swimming and diving JV team beat Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta/Minnewaska Area 114-9! The Fusion varsity squad more than doubled up on the Gators and won 98-46. They travel to Alexandria for the Section 3A True Team meet this Saturday; it begins at 12 p.m. at Jefferson High School.

Actually, there is no boys' swimming team with MA/CA/MA...I just realized that it's simply "Morris Area" and that Minnewaska Area pulled out of that co-op team recently due to not having any kids involved in that winter sport. That does explain a little bit why there was no depth to the Fusion team's opponent tonight. It's a sad sight to see, having an area athletic program suffering to that extent.

A sign of the times, you could say.

At Morris, the Prairie Centre Area North Stars boys' hockey team defeated the Morris/Benson Area Storm 6-1 for a second win in a row; they are now 8-6 overall and host Redwood Valley/BOLD next Tuesday, Jan. 17, on the Sauk Centre ice.

It's a mixed bag for Sauk Centre varsity sports tonight

While both varsity basketball teams lost tonight, other Sauk Centre teams picked up important wins in non-conference action.

The Prairie Centre Area North Stars boys' hockey team defeated Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake 3-1 on the Sauk Centre ice.

At the high school pool in Sauk Centre, the Fusion boys' swimming and diving team defeated Park Rapids Area 99-87.

The Sauk Centre-Melrose wrestling team was idle tonight; they host Minnewaska Area in a conference dual on Thursday night in Sauk Centre.

BOB FM has tonight's boys' basketball border battle on the air

Sauk Centre and Melrose Area are dueling in a West Central North Conference boys' basketball game tonight on the Mainstreeters' home court.

Updates: the girls' basketball team lost to Melrose 39 to 38. The Dutchmen trailed 38-33 with 2:33 on the clock, but they scored the final six points of the game in the final 40 seconds with two three-pointers to dash the hearts of every Sauk Centre player and fan in the gym.

The boys' basketball team is trailing 52-38 with 9 minutes left in the game. With 7 minutes left, the Dutchmen led 52-40. At halftime, Melrose led by 14 points.

A deficit of 39-31 was the closest Sauk Centre has been in the second half. Scottie Stone leads all scorers with 24 points at the 6:00 mark.

A three by Michael Knoblauch made it 54-45, but the Dutchmen responded right away with a fast break rebound shot by Elfering to go up 56-45.

With 2 minutes to go, it's 63-50 advantage Melrose Area.

At Minnewaska Area, Albany's boys' basketball team trails 56-51 with under 8 minutes to go in the second half. The Lakers, who have only two wins this season, led by 17 at the break 44-27. Scott Litchy's bucket made it 56-53 with 7:35 to go. The Huskies started the second half with a 6-0 run to help get back in the game.

Now it's 57-55 with the Lakers ahead. A bucket by Harlander made it 62-57 with just under 6 minutes left in the game. Under 4:00 left, it's 64-61 Minnewaska. Dylan Shay, who was scoreless in the first half, got to 6 points with a bucket to make it 64-63 with 3:30 left.

An Andrew Ostrander bucket then made it 66-63 with under 3:00 to go in the game. Blake Johnsrud's bucket with 2:35 left made it 68-63. The Lakers then hit another field goal with 2:09 left to make it 70-63.

Albany called a timeout at that point with the game slipping away. Down the stretch, the game did indeed slip away and Minnewaska Area won the West Central North Conference opener by 12 points. Final: Minnewaska Area 79, Albany 67.

Co-head coach Schreiner commented, "This will be a big week for us. We have a rematch with Park Rapids on Tuesday in Sauk Centre. They beat us earlier in the season, and we are looking forward to a very close and competitive meet with them this week. Then on Thursday we get the Gators from Morris/Minnewaska/CA. Both meets are at the Sauk Centre school."

Streeters snap New London-Spicer's 9-game streak

The girls not only beat the Wildcats, they handled the Wildcats tonight in Sauk Centre.
New London-Spicer, a storied program in the West Central Conference since joining the league in 1983, got off to a sluggish start and couldn't muster much of anything on offense. Thanks in large part to Sauk's impressive defensive effort. Jena Klaphake and Liz Ellens, once again, proved that keeping opponents from scoring is just as important as scoring.

Sauk also handled the Wildcats press with great ball handling and passing, giving the Wildcats,and their coach, fits. In fact, their coach got "T'd" up late in the second quarter.

Late in the game, ahead by a healthy margin, Sauk moved the ball efficiently around the perimeter. When it came time to score, they called on Macy Weller and Ashley Gruber. Weller was a force down low and Gruber was on the receiving end of a couple great feeds that she converted for big baskets throughout the night.

In the end, it was an all around solid effort that led to double-digit win.

The win improved Sauk to 1-1 in WCCN play.

Which keeps them in the hunt for a conference title.

With 2:30 left in the game, the Mainstreeters led 47-38.

NL-S is ranked #9 in the latest Class AA poll and has a 9-1 overall record. The Wildcats (1-0 WCCN) average 61.4 points per game on offense while holding teams to 48.1 points per game. The Mainstreeters (0-1 WCCN) are putting up 56.7 points per game while holding teams to 42.2 points per game.

Fusion boys' swimming and diving earns first win

Sauk Centre/Melrose defeated Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield 103-83 last night at the D-C High School to earn their first win of the season.

Ethan Ross earned two championships in the 200 freestyle (2:03.18) and 500 freestyle (5:39.21) to pace the Fusion.

They travel to Minneapolis to the U of M for an invitational on Saturday.

Streeter girls up big on BBE

The Mainstreeters have a mounting lead against Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa late in the second half after going up 44-14 at halftime. Final score: Sauk Centre 65, B-B-E 28. The Jaguars fell to 2-7 overall, while the Mainstreeters are 8-2 heading into this Friday's big game with New London-Spicer.

Hockey squad loses to Flyers

The North Stars were shut out Tuesday night 6-0 by Little Falls in Little Falls.

The Stars were out-shot 28-14 in the contest and their record fell to 6-5 on the season.

Little falls beat Sauk Centre 72-67 in the title game of the Little Falls Holiday Tournament.
SC had a ten point lead at halftime 35-25.
Little falls is now 6-1, they average 85 points a game and had 105 in one of those games.
The Sauk Centre boys are 5-3 and play at LP/GE on Thursday.

North Stars' cooled off by Sauk Rapids-Rice

In the final game of the Granite City Classic, the Prairie Centre Area North Stars boys' hockey team was cooled off in a 4-2 loss to Sauk Rapids-Rice after winning their previous six outings.

After both teams battled to a 1-1 tie through two periods, the Storm erupted for three goals in the final period to pick up the win. Prairie Centre's six-game winning streak is the longest the program has enjoyed since the merging of the Long Prairie and Sauk Centre/Melrose programs earlier in the 2000s.

Now 6-4, the North Stars next take on Section 6A rival Little Falls (7-6) on Tuesday, Jan. 3 in Little Falls. The Flyers have won four games in a row, including two over Top 20 Class 1A schools.

An update on Fusion boys' swimming and diving, the Sauk Centre/Melrose team placed third at the five-team Brainerd Invitational on Thursday. Team scores were: Brainerd 663, Monticello 558, Sauk Centre/Melrose 382, Perham 314, Bemidji 203.

Streeter girls win Pierz tourney

The Sauk Centre girls beat St. Cloud Cathedral Wednesday night to claim title honors at the Pierz Healy Holiday Tournament.

Sauk won 53-34 after leading just 22-20 at the half.

Macy Weller and Ashley Gruber were named to the all-tournament team.

Streeter boys come from behind to win tourney opener

Sauk trailed by 13 at one point, but came back Wednesday to beat Pequot Lakes 62-60 in the opener of their holiday tourney in Little Falls.

Nick Adams scored 21 points and Patrick Knoblauch added 13 to lead the Streeters, who will face Little Falls at 7 p.m. tomorrow.

The win improves Sauk's record to 5-2.

North Stars make it six in a row

The Prairie Centre Area North Stars boys' hockey team won its sixth game in a row after edging Section 6A rival Morris/Benson Area 4-3 at the St. Cloud tournament today.

The North Stars, now 6-3 overall, face Sauk Rapids-Rice tomorrow at 4:15 p.m. in the championship game.

At Pierz, the Mainstreeters girls' basketball team leads St. Cloud Cathedral 27-21 with 12 minutes left in the game. Final score: Sauk Centre 53, Cathedral 34.

The Mainstreeters take a 6-2 record into the new year. They next face Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (2-6, 0-2 Central MN Conference) on Tuesday, Jan. 3 on the home court in Sauk Centre.

Prairie Centre Area wins 4-3 in opening around of the St. Cloud Tournament

In a hockey game held earlier today against Northern Lights, the Prairie Centre Area North Stars boys' hockey team won 4-3.

They are in action tomorrow and Thursday for the final two rounds of the tournament.

No word yet on who they play tomorrow.

The Mainstreeter girls' basketball team won against Crosby-Ironton in their opening-round game of the Pierz Healy tournament tonight. They play in the championship at 8 p.m. on Wednesday night. The final score of Sauk Centre's game was 39-27.

Pierz and St. Cloud Cathedral were playing in the other semifinal game tonight. During the second half at one point the Pioneers held a slim 46-41 lead. The Crusaders ended up winning, though, by a 62-50 margin.

At St. Cloud's MAC, the Prairie Centre Area North Stars boys' hockey team opens up a Holiday Tournament today as well. That event runs through Thursday night. The North Stars' game today began at 11 a.m. against Northern Lights.

At 5:00 p.m. tonight, the Sauk Centre/Melrose wrestling team will host a quadrangular in Melrose. Other teams included are Princeton, Mora and Becker.

Later in the evening, the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters girls' basketball team hosts Albany in the West Central Conference North opener. Both teams are expected to contend for the conference championship this season.

On the home court tonight, the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters boys' basketball team defeated fellow Section 6AA member Osakis 77-69. It's a nice win that helps the team bounce back after getting beaten soundly at state-ranked Montevideo on Friday night.

At Osakis, the Mainstreeter girls' basketball team won 52-43.

In a non-conference game at Montevideo tonight, the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters girls' basketball team defeated the Thunderhawks 69-60. Their next game is next Tuesday at Osakis. The Silverstreaks are 4-2 overall; tonight they lost to Melrose Area 49-40 in Melrose.

Sauk Centre is 4-1 overall and 0-0 in the West Central North Conference. They begin conference play next Thursday, when they entertain long-time rival Albany at the home gymnasium. Albany is 3-2 overall and lost to #2-ranked Braham tonight 91-47.

No word yet on how the Mainstreeter boys' basketball team fared at Montevideo.

**Update on Saturday...the boys' basketball team lost 75-41 to the Thunderhawks. They were paced by Nick Adams' 11 points. The scoring for Sauk Centre was as follows: Seth Otte 2, Patrick Knoblauch 7, Josh Buschette 1, Nick Adams 11, Dylan Kohorst 2, Terrance Ellis 6, Travis Rieland 10, Sam Fischer 2.

The Mainstreeters played a great first half, trailing only 35-27. They were limited to only 14 points in the second half, though, while Montevideo put up 40. Sauk Centre shot 15-for-44 from the field, while the Thunderhawks went a robust 28-of-42 from the floor and 9-of-17 beyond the arc.

Jena Klaphake and Macy Weller led the Streeter girls' team with 12 points each. Lexi Berscheit hit two three-pointers to help her amass 9 points as the third-leading scorer.

Final in girls' action: Alexandria 60, Sauk Centre 44. Against a very good Cardinals team, the Mainstreeters suffered over 20 turnovers and couldn't get any breaks against a trapping half court defense.

Final in boys' action: B-B-E 59, Sauk Centre 50. Against the #1-ranked (Class A) Jaguars, the Mainstreeters hung tough the entire game and had a 14-point second-half deficit cut down to five points with around 5 minutes left.

The lone home contest involves the Sauk Centre/Melrose wrestlers hosting a triangular that started at 5 p.m. at the high school.

The Prairie Centre Area North Stars host Section 6A rival Wadena-Deer Creek in Long Prairie; the Fusion boys' swimmers are in Park Rapids; the girls' basketball team is in Alexandria; and the boys' basketball team faces #1-ranked (Class A) Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in Brooten.

As the world turns...West Central Conference drama continues

It ain't over yet...

All the recent changes to the West Central Conference may have the typical sports fan out there thinking that things may settle down for awhile.

Not a bit.

The Western Guard newspaper (Madison's paper) reported recently that Lac qui Parle Valley is strongly considering fleeing the WCC to join the Camden Conference for most sports and the Little Sioux for football.

LQPV has been a member of the West Central Conference since 1990, when the 4 school districts of Marietta/Nassau, Madison, Appleton and Milan merged. They had a fair amount of success in the 1990s when their enrollment was high and they were one of the larger schools in the league.

Currently they are hovering under 900 students K-12...not good. The economies of their small towns are suffering considerably.

As far as the Camden Conference is concerned...LQPV would by far be the biggest school in that league if that move took place. The Camden currently includes schools such as MACCRAY (K-12 is around 700 students), Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (K-12 is around 550) and Dawson-Boyd (K-12 is around 650). Other schools in that league include Minneota, Canby, Lincoln HI (Ivanhoe), Russel-Tyler-Ruthton and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton. In football those above-mentioned schools with the exception of K-M-S are all in the Little Sioux Conference; all but Tracy-Milroy-Balaton are in Class 1A. (T-M-B is in Class 2A.)

As we learn more on this over the next few weeks and months we'll keep our public up to date!

Prairie Centre Area earns first win of the season

Against a solid and undefeated Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato team on the Sauk Centre ice, the Prairie Centre Area North Stars boys' hockey team earned its first win of the season by a 4-3 score.

L/D-C (3-1) trailed 4-2 before they scored with roughly 3:00 left in the third period. They launched a few shots in the closing minute but none were successful.

Derek Holm scored the Stars' first goal after they fell behind 2-0. Holm rifled a snapshot from the point that beat the goalie high. Ryan Connor then scored on a nifty shot coming down the right wing boards. Connor cut to the net and scored on a hard wrister that caught the corner of the net.

Connor scored again to give Prairie Center a 3-2 lead and then Holm set up Cody Bartkowicz, who tipped it past the netminder for a 4-2 lead.

L-DC scored late to make it 4-3 but Stars goalie Justin Brever held his ground til the final seconds ticked off for the big win.

North Stars drop 3-1 contest to Detroit Lakes

Detroit Lakes kept its hot streak going with a 3-1 win over Prairie Centre Area on the Long Prairie ice last night. The Lakers improved to 3-2 with the win, which came on the heels of two victories over #18-ranked Fergus Falls and also Northern Lakes. The North Stars fell to 0-3 on the young season.

Prairie Centre Area can be heard on BOB FM in tonight's contest against undefeated Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (3-0).

The Mainstreeters girls' basketball team led 52-24 with under 5:00 to go in the game against visiting Holdingford tonight. The Huskers are in the same sub-section as Sauk Centre in basketball.

The Sauk Centre boys’ basketball team made it two in a row with a nice comeback win tonight over Holdingford. After trailing 42-29 at the half, the Streeters outscored the Huskers 33-10 in the second half for a 62-52 victory. Pat Knoblauch led the team for the second straight game with 19 points. Travis Rieland scored 18 and Nick Adams had his second straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Update on the girls' squad...Twelve different players scored in Sauk’s 56-30 win over Holdingford tonight in girls’ hoops. The Streeters led 38-11 at the half and never looked back. Macy Weller led the team with 12 points. Sauk Centre, which is ranked #10 in Class 2A in the latest coaches' poll, will take on Long Prairie-Grey Eagle this Friday in Long Prairie to try and improve to 3-0 on the season.

Boys hoop squad dominates in opener

Patrick Knoblauch looks to stop and pop during Friday's action. Knoblauch finished with 24 points seven assists and five rebounds.

The Mainstreeters had quite the offensive output in their first game of the season Friday, beating Wadena-Deer Creek 85-57.

Patrick Knoblauch scored 24 points and Travis Rieland added 19 to lift Sauk to the win.

The Streeters scored 50 points in the first half and led 50-31 heading into the locker room. Both Rieland and Knoblauch got hot from the outside, making some key three-pointers that helped give Sauk the commanding lead.

Junior center Nick Adams also posted a double-double, notching 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Streeters will take their show on the road Tuesday against Holdingford.

North Stars rally falls short

The Prairie Centre North Star hockey team had several scoring chances throughout Friday night's game against their rival neighbor Alexandria, but fell short 3-2.

The Stars' Nate Mettenburg scored his first tally of the year as the teams skated to a 1-1 tie after two periods. Prairie Centre outshot Alex 22-14 through the first two frames.

But Alexandria scored two quick goals in the third and it appeared the Stars were running out of gas. But with 1:38 left senior defenseman Derek Holm rifled home a shot from the half boards - a tough angled shot that somehow found the back of the net. The Stars had already pulled goalie Justin Brever and kept him off the ice for a chance to tie. They had a few scrums around the net in the final minute but couldn't get off any point blank quality shots.

It was a hard-fought game and got a little chippy at the end. The referees directed the Alexandria players to exit the ice first without shaking hands. There seemed to be some confusion from the coaching staffs on why the kids didn't shake hands, but the coaches did exchange handshakes in what turned out to be an entertaining game between crosstown foes.

Mainstreeter boys' basketball drubs Wadena-Deer Creek in season opener

The Sauk Centre Mainstreeters boys' basketball team won big over visiting Wadena-Deer Creek tonight in both teams' season opener. Final score: Sauk Centre 85, Wadena-Deer Creek 57. The Mainstreeters were led by Patrick Knoblauch's 24 points, seven assists and five rebounds.

Their next action is at Holdingford next Tuesday night.

When I left the Civic Arena at the end of the second period, River Lakes held a 2-1 lead. Both teams punched in goals while I was watching over the majority of the second period. It was an evenly-played match from what I saw. Hopefully the North Stars pulled out the win!

At the high school gymnasium, the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters girls' basketball team won their season opener 44-27 over St. Cloud Cathedral. They will sit on a 1-0 record over the next four days of practice before another home game next Tuesday, Dec. 6 against sub-section rival Holdingford.

The Mainstreeters jumped out to a 13-0 lead tonight against the Crusaders while shutting out the visitors over the game's first 8 minutes of play. Cathedral made a run to make it 13-9, but that was as close as they'd get as the Mainstreeters led 22-10 at the break.

Sauk Centre continued to build on the halftime lead and was able to overcome poor 11-for-21 free throw shooting. The Crusader helped the cause for the Maroon by going a dismal 9-of-29 from the charity stripe.

Macy Weller, a junior post, led all scorers with 18 points.

The Mainstreeters girls' basketball team opens the 2011-12 season tonight with a home game against former conference rival St. Cloud Cathedral. The B-squad and C-squad games begin at 6 p.m., with the varsity tip-off to follow at 7:30 p.m. at the high school gymnasium.

At the Sauk Centre Civic Arena, the Prairie Centre Area North Stars boys' hockey team begins their new season with a contest against River Lakes, a conglomerate including Paynesville Area, Albany, Rocori and New London-Spicer schools. The puck drops at 7 p.m.

Despite a valiant effort and plenty of close calls, the Sauk Centre girls' swimming and diving team will not be sending anybody on to the state meet.
The Mainstreeters swam well at the section meet Friday and Saturday in Morris, but couldn’t muster any qualifiers in what has become a very tough section. Sartell-St. Stephen’s Marisa Wood and Ellen Bloom dominated the meet in several individual categories.
Sauk’s best chance to get to state was in relays. The 400-meter freestyle relay and the 200 freestyle relay both fared well, but fell just short. The 400-relay team was disqualified in the finals. Still, even their preliminary time wouldn’t have been good enough to get them to state. The team of Sarah Nelson, Katie Schulte, Jenna Tullis and Tiana Molitor finished third in prelims with a time of 3:51.42, more than five seconds ahead of their seed time.
The 200 freestyle relay squad of Nelson, Julie Bushard, Tullis and Molitor also had a great showing, finishing fourth in the finals with a time of 1:44.50, more than five seconds ahead of their seed time.
That was the case for many Sauk swimmers, who earned improved times in the section meet.
Other top finishers in individual categories were Molitor and Tullis. Each posted a fifth place finish. Tullis, a senior who capped off a great career, was fifth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.64, more than six seconds ahead of her seed time.
Molitor was fifth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.64. Her preliminary time was even better at 54.84, which was ahead of her seed time of 56.00.
Molitor also finished seventh in the 50 freestyle in 25.22. Sarah Nelson was ninth in that race, capping off an impressive meet for both sophomores, who look to be great up-and-comers for the Sauk program. In addition to her ninth place mark in the 50 freestyle, Nelson was also seventh in the 100 butterfly in 1:05.46, more than two seconds ahead of her season best seed time.
Senior Katie Schulte also turned in a good meet, finishing 9th in the 500 freestyle in 5:46.08, a full eight seconds ahead of her seed time. Schulte was also 14th in the 200 freestyle in 2:11.16, two-plus seconds ahead of her season best.
Also placing for the Streeters were senior Tia Marthaler(9th, 100 breaststroke, 1:15.95), Shaylynn Wichryk (19th, diving, 93.35), Danielle Banal (15th, 100 butterfly, 1:10.67; 14th, 100 backstroke 1:08.15), and the 200 medley relay team of Kendyl Tullis, Marthaler, Banal and Bushard, who finished 9th in 2:03.64.
Despite not getting anyone through the tough section, the Sauk girls had an outstanding season, and despite losing some quality seniors such as Tullis, Schulte and Marthaler, will be a forced to be reckoned with in the next couple years with a plethora of quality young swimmers waiting in the wings.

Mainstreeters volleyball jumps all over Esko in game one

Sauk Centre jumped ahead 6-0 right away and now leads 11-2 after Macy Weller pounded down a kill in game one.

Game two...
After winning game one 25-9, the Mainstreeters again jumped out to a big lead in game two and led 8-1 in the early stages. As of this update at 11:26 a.m., the blog counter hit 35,000 on the nose!
The Mainstreeters earned a side out and it's 13-5.
Esko then scored three straight to make it 13-8.
An Esko hit out of bounds put the Mainstreeters up 16-9.
Sauk Centre put the pedal down and ended up on a 4-0 run to lead 19-9; Esko called their final timeout.

**Watch out, though. Maple Lake trailed 17-6 in the opening game of their conference match up with Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on Sept. 29. They ended up coming back to lose 25-23 in that game one. Ultimately they pushed the Jaguars to five full games before losing to B-B-E 15-13 in game five.

Mainstreeters girls' swimming and diving gears up for Section 6A meet

Action begins at 5 p.m. today at the University of Minnesota-Morris. The top 16 finishers in each event will advance to the second round of Section 6A.

The second day of the meet begins in Morris at 11 a.m. (diving finals) and 3 p.m. (swimming finals) on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Fan Buses slated for state volleyball tourney

Minnesota National Bank and First State Bank are once again sponsoring fan buses for Thursday and Friday night's games for the Sauk Centre volleyball squad.

The Streeters will play Jordan Thursday at 7 p.m. and win or lose will play Friday at 7 p.m.

Buses are scheduled to leave from the high school at 3:30 p.m. on both days.

Cost to ride is $10. Deadline to sign up is noon on Thursday.

They did it again.

After going the distance against Albany and Little Falls to get through the sub-section playoffs, the Sauk Centre volleyball squad beat Annandale 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-16) to advance to their second consecutive state tournament.

While the matches against Albany and Little Falls were highly intense and close, this one was relatively anti-climactic. Sauk got out to an early lead in game one and never looked back. Annandale had some spurts of solid play, but the 26-4 Streeters were just too much for the 10-19 Cardinals.

After struggling with their serving and passing in their last two matches, Sauk looked solid in the section final. They were able to spread the ball around to numerous hitters. It wasn’t just Macy Weller and Krista Primus putting balls down…it was Ashley Kollman, Kendra Zenzen, Ashley Gruber, Brianna VonWahdle and many more taking their turns. Solid setting was provided by both Lexie Berscheit and Jena Klaphake.

Klaphake, along with Weller and Primus, were named to the All-Section squad after the game.

The win improves Sauk to 27-4 and puts them in position to make a run at a state title. Their first-round opponent is unknown at this point. They will play Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center at either 5 p.m. or 7 p.m.

Jacob Gerhartz medals at State Cross Country meet!

In a superb performance at the state cross country meet this afternoon, senior Jacob Gerhartz ran a 16:19.2 race and took seventh place individually to earn a Top-10 medal. A total of 150 male athletes competed in the race.

Eighth grader Madison Greenwaldt placed 80th with a race of 16:19.0. A total of 156 female athletes competed in the race.

The 11th-ranked Sauk Centre Mainstreeters volleyball team swept upstart Annandale out of the playoffs with a 25-12, 25-16, 25-16 sweep in the Section 6AA championship match.

In game three, the Mainstreeters overcame a 4-2 deficit to take a 7-6 lead and then never trail the rest of the way.

A block from Kendra Zenzen, two straight kills by Macy Weller and a kill by Ashley Kollman fueled a rally that gave them a 13-9 lead. They went on another surge after leading 17-13 to close out the match with an 8-3 run to close out the match.

Coach Klaphake commented right after winning today, "The girls played really well. Taking a break yesterday and going to the football game was good for us. We came out fired up today.

Our serve-receive and ball control was great tonight. We had them on their heels for most of the match."

The Class 2A state volleyball tournament opens up on Thursday this next week. Match time for the quarterfinal match will be either at 5 p.m. or 7 p.m.

Seeding takes place at 8 a.m. on Sunday (tomorrow), and later tomorrow morning the first-round opponent for Sauk Centre will be announced.

Sauk Centre Mainstreeters are in action at St. Ben's

Early in game one the Mainstreeters fought through ties at 2-2, 6-6 and 7-7 against the Annandale Cardinals, who entered the match with a 10-19 overall record after winning only seven matches in the regular season.

A Cardinals' hit out of bounds to lead 12-7. A net violation on the Cardinals followed to put Sauk Centre up 13-7. Annandale promptly called a timeout.

Jena Klaphake has been serving the last five unanswered points. Klaphake earned an ace serve to put the Mainstreeters up 14-7. She then served out of bounds to make it 14-8 and give Annandale the side out.

A right-side kill by Macy Weller made it 15-8. Then it was 16-8 and 16-9. Another Weller kill made it 17-9. Sauk Centre is on a roll.

Then it's 18-9. Krista Primus's ace block gave Sauk Centre a 10-point lead at 19-9. Weller has been serving the last two points.

Since the 7-7 tie, it's been all Sauk Centre. They lead 20-9, and Annandale burned their other timeout.

Another Primus kill that found Annandale's back row made it 21-9. A Cardinals net violation made it 22-9.

Weller sent a serve over with heavy top spin that just cleared the net for another ace serve. 23-9...then Weller served it long. 23-10.

A Primus kill brought game point at 24-10.

Lexi Berscheit served it up, but the Cardinals earned a block for the side out. 24-11. A Sauk hit out of bounds made it 24-12.

The Mainstreeters earned the next point to take it 25-12. Plenty of highlights for Sauk Centre fans!

In game two, two Weller kills brought the Mainstreeters out to a quick 3-0 lead. They went on to lead 8-1 and 22-16.

Annandale made an error to make it 23-16. Then it was 24-16 at game point, with Weller serving. Both teams traded free balls, and the Cardinals committed another error to give Sauk Centre a 25-16 game two win.

Game three started at 2:43...
Sauk Centre trailed 4-2 early in game three before forcing ties at 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6. They took a brief one point lead, then fell into a 7-7 tie.

A Kendra Zenzen ace block put the Mainstreeters up 9-7. Then they had a 10-8 lead.

A kill by the Cardinals made it 10-9 advantage Sauk Centre.

Great run for Streeter boys

Patrick Knoblauch tosses one downfield to an open receiver. The Streeters tried passing the ball after they were stifled on the run throughout Friday's game.

Section 6AA Runner Up...not bad at all.

Seniors Darin Bushard, Sam Fischer. and Cody Bartkowicz brought home some hardware.

They believed and they DID achieve. After a 2-6 start, Sauk gave fans a reason to cheer.

In the end, Sauk just couldn't move the ball and the result was they couldn't move the scoreboard past zero.

Pierz, on the other hand, was able to run the ball and their offensive line dominated in a 28-0 victory, sending Sauk on along bus ride home.

Yet, the Mainstreeter boys, left for dead after a 1-6 regular season, gave fans something to cheer for, and, the best thing there is in sports — hope.

For the seniors, it was a great way to end their career — advancing to a section final for the first time since 2004.

For the underclassmen, they were able to experience something that can only benefit them for next year...and the year after.

For all the kids in the stands, this season was one that sent a message of promise for years to come.

At the outset, with numbers stacked against them, the Streeters never gave up and never gave in. Despite playing against teams twice their size, they might have gotten worn down, but never quit.

Kudos to the coaching staff, for helping get the program back on the right track. This was an important building block, setting a solid foundation for the next several years.

The hope is we get better each year, take a step forward, keep progressing. We need more kids out for football, and hopefully those watching in the stands will realize the fun that can be had on the gridiron.

Third quarter begins...

Sauk Centre started at their own 37-yard line. Ellis gained one yard on first down, and on second down the Mainstreeters picked up three yards. On third and six from their own 41, Michael Knoblauch carried up the middle for two yards to bring fourth down.

After the 4th-down punt, Pierz received Austin's high punt with 9:56 on the clock at their own 36-yard line after a small return of a couple yards.

On first and 10 from their 36, Pierz was called for a false start penalty to make it 1st-and-15. Josh Lanners was held to a three-yard gain on the play. A timeout was called by Sauk Centre.

Out of the timeout, Lanners busted loose and was stopped by Ellis after picking up a first down at the Sauk Centre 49-yard line. On the first down play, Lanners was met by Sam Fischer and Zach Wolbeck at the line of scrimmage. A personal foul was called against Sauk Centre of illegal contact (helmet to helmet hit).

Pierz then had first down on the Sauk Centre 31 after the penalty. The clock read 8:44. Pierz ran a dive play by Lanners to gain six yards. On 2nd-and-4, the Pioneers gained another first down. From the Sauk Centre 16, Pierz was held to a three-yard gain by Cody Bartkowicz. On second and seven, Lanners bolted around left tackle for 10 yards.

With first and goal at the Sauk Centre three, Pierz ran another dive play by Lanners for a touchdown with 6:36 on the clock.

On Sauk Centre's next series that began at their own 22-yard line with under 6:30 to go in the third quarter, they gained no yards on the first play. On 2nd-and-10, Knoblauch dropped back to pass, moved around in the pocket for a few seconds, and ultimately was dropped for a 7-yard loss in a sack.

On 3rd-and-17, Sauk Centre lined up with three wideouts. On a long bomb deep down field, Preston Weber jumped up on the ball and grabbed it before Sauk Centre's guy had a chance to catch it. He proceeded to run the ball back for about a 40-yard return to the Sauk Centre six-yard line. The clock read 4:44.

On first and goal from the six, Pierz ran for four yards. On second and two, Pierz ran for another yard. On third and one, the Pioneers ran in a quarterback keeper by Preston Weber for a touchdown with 3:38 left in the third quarter. Not good.

After the PAT kick, the score read Pierz 28, Sauk Centre 0.

On the next series, Sauk Centre started on their own 38-yard line. On first down, Roosevelt Austin carried for a nice seven-yard gain. On 2nd-and-3, Austin carried for a first down good for three yards on the nose.

With first down near midfield at their own 48, Sauk Centre ran a sweep around the left side by Austin. Flags flew to the ground. Austin ran to about the 45-yard line of Pierz. The penalty was on Pierz, a big one, of a facemask kind that gave the Mainstreeters first down at the Pierz 30-yard line.

On first down from the 30 with two minutes to go in the third quarter, Knoblauch dropped back to pass, scrambled out of the pocket, and bolted past the line of scrimmage for a nice four-yard gain. On second and six, Austin got the ball on a sweep and picked up three yards. On third and three, Austin ran again but was stopped short of the first down by two Pierz defenders after a one-yard gain. That ended the third quarter action.

After three quarters, Pierz 28, Sauk Centre 0.

On fourth and one to start the fourth quarter, Austin gained the first down by carrying it forward for one yard before getting shoved back by a host of Pierz defenders. On first and 10 from the Pierz 20, a pass was thrown incomplete. On second down, Austin gained two yards. On third down, Bartkowicz lost three yards. On fourth and 11, Knoblauch's bomb into the end zone was knocked down by Preston Weber. The ball was turned over on downs at the Pierz 21 with 9:56 left in the game.

With Pierz taking over, they carried for a four-yard gain on first down. On second down, Tyler Milner carried a sweep for a first down and was brought down by Devan Fischer at their own 36-yard line. On the next play, Michael Knoblauch held the Pierz ball carrier to a three-yard gain. On 2nd-and-7, the Pioneers gained five yards. On 3rd-and-2, Pierz picked up a big gain up the middle to the Mainstreeters' 45-yard line. He was stopped by Derek Holm on the tackle.

On first and 10 on the Sauk Centre, Pierz picked up five yards. On 2nd and 5, Roosevelt Austin flew past some would-be tacklers and stopped Pierz for a three-yard gain. Pierz had 3rd-and-2 with the clock running under 6 minutes to go in the game. From the 38, Pierz ran for 14 yards to the Sauk Centre 24-yard line. Pierz ran for three yards on 1st-and-10 with Trent Berscheit making the stop. Pierz then ran for a six-yard gain to get 3rd-and-1. They got the first down on the 3rd-down play and had possession at the Sauk Centre 13. The Pioneers picked up one yard and then two yards, with Holm making the stop on the second-down play. Pierz had third-and-seven at the Sauk Centre 10-yard line. Michael Knoblauch earned a tackle-for-a-loss and helped push the Pioneers back to the 11-yard line. On fourth-and-8, the ball carrier was pushed back by Cody Bartcowicz and Sam Fischer to the 15-yard line.

The clock read 1:12. Pierz called a timeout.

Final score: Pierz 28, Sauk Centre 0.

Second quarter at Fargo...

On third and eight the Mainstreeters threw a long bomb but it fell incomplete.

After the punt, the Pioneers started from their own 39 yard line. They gained 7 yards on the first carry of the series. Josh Lanners then ran four yards for a first down at the Sauk Centre 49.

On the first down play, Michael Knoblauch came up with a tackle for a two-yard loss. So on second and 12, the Pioneers ran a sweep to the right, flags flew everywhere, and the Mainstreeters appeared to make a nice stop on the play. The flag was an illegal block in the back on Pierz, which brought up a second down and a big mark off of yardage. Pierz lost 10 yards from the spot of the foul to bring 2nd and 20 from their own 40.

On the second and long play, Pierz dropped back to pass to the left flats, and Preston Weber found Logan Meyer, one of the Pioneers' leading receivers, for a big gain. Pierz advanced to the 33-yard line of Sauk Centre with a fresh set of downs. It was the Pioneers' first big gain of the half on a pass play.

On first down, Lanners ran for five yards. On second down, Lanners ran again and picked up four yards to bring third and one...Ellis and M. Knoblauch made the stop for Sauk Centre. On third and one, Lanners ran once again and picked up the first down on the right sideline at the Mainstreeters' 21-yard line.

On first and 10 at the Sauk Centre 21, Lanners ran seven yards up the gut to bring 2nd-and-2. On the next play, Pierz ran in a touchdown (Lanners, again) but a flag flew in from the right side of the field. The touchdown stood (at the 7:13 mark of the 2nd quarter) and a facemask penalty on Sauk Centre was applied to the following kickoff. With 7:13 left, Pierz holds a 14-0 lead.

After the kickoff, Sauk Centre started from their own 19-yard line. On 1st and 10, Ellis ran for 3 yards. On second down, Pierz committed an encroachment penalty to bring 2nd and 2. Sauk Centre could not gain the first down on a carry by Michael Knoblauch, but he did get one yard of forward progress.

On a crucial third and one play inside the 6:00 mark, the Mainstreeters had Patrick Knoblauch run up the middle for a first down to the 30-yard line.

With a fresh set of downs at their own 30, the Mainstreeters had Cody Bartkowicz gain two yards on a sweep around the left side. On second and 8, Knoblauch was sacked for a 10-yard loss to bring third and long. On the next play, Sauk Centre's Derek Holm caught a pass from Knoblauch to get past the 30-yard line. A flag flew to the ground on the play, and Pierz was assessed a 5-yard facemask penalty. The down was repeated with third-and-three to go.

On this crucial 3rd-and-3 play, a timeout was called by Pierz. The clock read 3:07. Out of the timeout, Michael Knoblauch carried around right tackle for a first down. The Mainstreeters were out to their own 40 with 2:42 left.

On first and 10 from their 40, #32 for Pierz hauled down a tipped pass for an interception (Tyler Milner) and got about 10 yards on the return. The clock read 2:27 after Milner was stopped cold in his tracks by Roosevelt Austin at the Pierz 44.

From their 44 on first and 10, Pierz was met on the running back's handoff by Sauk Centre's Zach Wolbeck with a three yard loss. On second and 13, Pierz dropped back to pass, and the ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage and flew like a dead duck high in the air. Austin hauled it in for an interception at around the 35-yard line.

Sauk Centre had first down on the Pierz with about 1:30 left. They had a big loss on the play on a QB sack, and on 2nd-and-21, Austin carried for a big gain to the Mainstreeters' 49-yard line.

On 3rd-and-10 with 37 seconds left in the first half, Knoblauch dropped back to pass but the ball flew incomplete through the hands of Derek Holm. On fourth-and-10, the Mainstreeters elected to punt.

Austin's punt sailed down near the goal line, and Dylan Kohorst was Johnny-on-the-spot to down the ball at the Pierz one-yard line with 20 seconds left.

As expected, the Pioneers ran the ball twice and got zero yards. The end of the first half arrived. Pierz 14, Sauk Centre 0.

Hello Streeter fans and welcome to the Section Final game between the Sauk centre No. 7 seeded Mainstreeters (4-6) and the top-seeded Pierz Pioneers (9-1).
Both teams are coming into the section final with a chance to advance to the coveted state tournament where they will play the Section 7 winner Moose Lake-Willow River (11-0). They beat Cook County 48-0 in the section 7 finals Thursday night.

Tonight’s game will feature two teams who rely heavily on running the ball. Pierz, whose only loss of the year came to Sauk Centre’s neighbor Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 31-21 on Oct. 7 in Belgrade, has a lot of depth at the running back position. They most certainly are a run-first team and it will be interesting to see if Sauk Centre can stop them early and force them to change their game plan.

The Mainstreeters won’t be much different in regards to their game plan. They are led by a three-headed monster in the backfield – three players who can break a 75-yarder at anytime. Roosevelt Austin is the No. 1 back. He leads the team in yardage and touchdowns and if the Streeters continue to advance would have a chance at the single season touchdown record of 23.

Michael Knoblauch and Cody Bartkowicz are Sauk’s two other backs. Both average about 10 carries a game and have averaged close to 10 yards a carry in their first two playoff games.

Yes, the Streeters have run at will in their first two playoff wins — a 56-29 win over Osakis and a 48-0 win over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle — but may be a little more hard pressed to run against the Pioneers, who have a bit bigger defensive line and more athletic linebackers.

But that’s okay, because Sauk has a more than capable throwing quarterback in junior Patrick Knoblauch and two strong targets in Terrence Ellis and Derek Holm. Knoblauch has connected with Holm for big yardage plays twice in the two previous games, one for a score.

Not much is known about Pierz’s passing game because they haven’t had to throw the ball to win games.

There is also the variable of classes. Pierz plays a 2A schedule in the Central Minnesota Conference, while Sauk played a 3A schedule against the likes of Albany and New London-Spicer. What does this mean?
These are two good teams, both who will try to run the ball and stop the run. If both team sare able to run, expect a high scoring affair. If not, expect a lot of punts.
