Weller leads pack into finals

Savana Weller has finished second the past two years in the 800-meter run at the state meet. But this year she is vying to take the tape and she has put herself in good position to do so. Weller finished with the top time in Friday's preliminaries at Hamline University.
Her time of 2:17.90 was a full second better than Kasson-Mantorville's Laurel Ramer.

Ramer entered Friday's prelims with the top seed time of 2:16.61. The freshman finished second behind Weller on Friday, though. Weller demolished her seed time of 2:22.42 with her career-best performance.

Weller will try to cap off her outstanding track career with win on Saturday. She will race in the 800-meter run at 5:47 p.m. But it will be her second race of the day as she will also compete in the 4x800-meter run with Maren Greenwaldt, Kali Peschel and Rebecca Macey at 3 p.m.

Macey, Peschel, Weller and Elizabeth Hemsworth will also compete in the 4x400-meter relay to cap off the state meet at 6:25 p.m.

Both relays have a shot at a state title. Should be interesting.

Check back for results.

Hemsworth, Weller both earn Class A state finals berths for the Mainstreeters' track and field

Hemsworth advanced to the finals in the 400 meter Dash at the Class A state track and field tournament, after running a 59.87-second race. She placed fourth in her heat.

Here's a video clip of Savana Weller during the first lap of the 800 Run.

Sophomore Elizabeth Hemsworth ran a 59.87-second race in the 400-meter Dash preliminaries, earning her a berth in Saturday's state finals in that event. Her time in the 400 today ranks her at number six out of the performers in tomorrow's 400 open finals.

Savana Weller ran a 2:17.90 in the 800-meter Run preliminaries, also good for a berth in Saturday's state finals. She won heat number two.

In Saturday's 800 meter Run finals, Weller's biggest competition will come from Laurel Ramer, freshmen, from Kasson-Mantorville. She won the first heat today with a time of 2:18.96. Her seed time is 2:16.61.

(Savana's seed time was 2:22.42.)

Following her 800 preliminaries race, Weller said, "Some people tell me that I should just be happy to be at state, and I think no, I'm here to win it. I'm not taking it for granted that I'm here, but I want more out of it. Others say you've been there so many times why are you nervous? It's never the same, with different competition you never know what's gonna happen."
