Sauk Centre-Melrose wrestlers 7th at Benson Invitational

The Sauk Centre-Melrose wrestling team took seventh out of 11 teams at Benson today. They tied the host Braves squad with 121.5 team points. It was a highly competitive afternoon in Benson, as the third-place team (Breckenridge/Campbell-Tintah) had 127 team points.

Injuries have shortened SC-M's lineup, but a number of athletes had great outings in a tough field for SC-M.

Senior Saul Ellering was the lone champion for SC-M; he won the 220-pound title.

Up next: the SC-M wrestlers travel to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle for a non-conference dual meet on Tuesday, Jan. 8. It is a K-12 event where elementary wrestlers will compete beginning at 5 p.m., with the JV and varsity matches to follow.

More will follow later.

With under six minutes left in the game, Sauk Centre has a slim 41-40 lead over Albany in a non-conference girls' basketball game tonight.

With about four minutes left, the Mainstreeters hold a 45-42 lead after Jena Klaphake hit a bucket.

Albany held a 38-28 lead earlier in the game.

The score remains 45-42 with only 76 seconds left.

Jordan Gamradt is at the line for a bonus opportunity with a two-point lead. She hit the first one with 39.6 seconds left and made the second one! Now it's 47-43.

Albany's Amizah Eickoff hit a rebound bucket on her own missed shot, and the Huskies called an immediate timeout...47-45 Sauk Centre with 19.7 seconds left.

Sauk Centre in-bounded against full court pressure, and Macy Weller was fouled with just over 18 ticks remaining. She'll get a bonus opportunity at the line. She hit the first one, and Albany called their final timeout. Sauk Centre 48, Albany 45.

Busy, busy, busy, busy!

Christmas is behind us, the New Year's holiday has been put to rest...time to get back into the flow of things for the remainder of the 2012-13 winter sports season. A mountain of high school sports is in store over the next three days/nights for the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters. With the start of the new year on the calendar, we at the Sauk Centre Herald strive to be your one-stop spot to keep up to date on all the varsity teams at SCHS. As we have for the past four years, we'll continue posting fresh information at this blog on results throughout the week on games/meets/tournaments...and continue with feature articles and exciting action photos in the weekly print edition.

Thursday night: a boys' basketball game at LQPV (Hantho Township, Lac qui Parle County)...the Eagles compete in the West Central South Conference and hold a 4-5 overall record (1-4 WCC-South), but the game does count towards both teams' conference standing...Sauk Centre is 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the WCC-North; also, the Fusion boys' swimming and diving team competes at a meet at Willmar in a Section 3A match up.

Friday night: a home girls' basketball game against a very tough Albany Area squad that's 8-2 overall and holds the top spot (3-0) in the Granite Ridge Conference. Both teams are the top contenders for the Sub-Section 6AA-North championship...but of course, there's much left to play for during the regular season, including jockeying for a high playoff seed. Sauk Centre ended the December campaign with an unblemished 8-0 record and a 3-0 mark in the West Central North standings.

**Also Friday: a "home" boys' hockey game at the Long Prairie Expo Arena, where the Prairie Centre Area North Stars host Bagley in a make-up contest.

Saturday: the Sauk Centre-Melrose wrestling team travels to an invitational at Benson. Teams included are Barnesville, Minnewaska Area, Mahnomen/Waubun, Fergus Falls, Breckenridge/Campbell-Tintah, Border West, Benson and West Central Area. SC-M has a good shot at finishing in the top four of the field.
