Hemsworth takes third in 400 open! Winters is 8th in the boys' 800

Elizabeth Hemsworth also broke her record in that event, set just yesterday. Her new personal record in the 400, which is also the new school record at Sauk Centre, is 57.82 seconds.

Senior Isaac Winters had a great finish to his outstanding career as a three-sport Sauk Centre Mainstreeters athlete. In the finals today for the 800 run, Winters finished eighth with a time of 2:01. It was only two seconds off his personal record, and school record, set yesterday in the state preliminaries.

Fun fact: Winters will continue his athletic career at St. John's University. Read more about that in next week's Sauk Centre Herald issue.

The Mainstreeters girls' 4x800 relay team also earned All-State honors, finishing seventh in today's finals that kicked off the championship day of the state track and field meet. They left it all on the track, shaving a full 16 seconds off of their seed time in the process.

Hemsworth, Winters both make finals at Class A state track and field meet

...and they both set new Sauk Centre school records!

Elizabeth Hemsworth (junior) and Isaac Winters (senior) will both compete in the finals at the state track and field meet on Saturday, June 11 at Hamline University's Klas Field complex in St. Paul.

Hemsworth ran a terrific race in the 400 open, blasting around the track in 58 seconds flat. Over the past three weeks, Hemsworth has now broken the school record three times. She now competes in the 400 finals at 5:14 p.m. on Saturday.

Winters also established a new Sauk Centre school record, his efforts coming in the 800 run.

"I'm so excited about making the finals," Winters said following the race. "I'm really happy to be able to earn a medal and have a shot at moving up in the standings tomorrow."

Winters is ranked eighth out of nine qualifiers for the boys' 800 finals. He ran the 800 today in a new school record time of 1:59.13, breaking the two minute mark for the first time in his career. He races at 6:00 p.m. in the 800 finals.

Saturday's schedule includes... 3:00 p.m. sharp, the girls' 4x800 relay race, which includes a foursome from Sauk Centre.

Amelia Maher makes a successful jump at the height of 4'10" in the High Jump event today...

Maher finished 11th in the High Jump today, a great performance for her final day of competing as a Sauk Centre Mainstreeters athlete. It was not the finish she wanted, but she can't hang her head about the multiple trips to the state meet she's had (3 in the last 4 years)...

Coach Tom Trutna commented, "She'll be hard to replace, she did many things well for us and was a great example of what hard work can do."

Check back later tonight and on Saturday morning for more updates from the state track and field meet.

Hintzen is state-bound once again

On a blistering hot day for round two of the Section 6AA meet, Sauk Centre senior Laura Hintzen earned a spot in the upcoming Class AA girls' state golf meet. Hintzen placed fifth overall out of all golfers in the section field, earning a two-day scorecard total of 171 at Wapicada Golf Course in St. Cloud.

The Class AA golf meet is at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan, coming on June 15-16.

On the boys' side, junior Dan Perry led the Mainstreeters at the Section 6AA meet. Perry, a junior, shot an 82 the first day at sections and a 100 on day two. Carter Kranz, an eighth grader for the Mainstreeters, barely missed the cut to advance to day two at sections by shooting an 86 on day one.

More details will appear in this week's June 9 issue of the Sauk Centre Herald.

An elusive goal is met by Mainstreeters junior speedster Elizabeth Hemsworth

At right, Elizabeth Hemsworth speeds towards the finish line of the 400 open during the Sub-Section 6A-1 meet on May 26 at Minnewaska Area. Hemsworth won the race while also establishing a new school record in that event (58.5s). Photo submitted.

What makes it special is that she broke her own record, set just a week before the sub-section meet. At the West Central North Conference meet in Milaca on May 17, Hemsworth broke 2010 graduate Savana Weller's 400 open record by running a time of 58.69 seconds. Hemsworth has been chasing the record since her freshmen season on the Mainstreeters track and field team.
