Can you have a moral victory in sports? Prairie Centre boys hockey did just that tonight

Against defending Section 6A champion Alexandria on their ice at Runestone Community Centre, the Prairie Centre North Stars boys hockey team lost a 5-4 overtime battle to the Cardinals to open the 2010-2011 season.

The North Stars are in action again next Tuesday (Dec. 7) when they host St.Cloud Apollo in Sauk Centre.

In boys basketball action, the Mainstreeters lost a West Central North Conference game to visiting Long Prairie-Grey Eagle tonight 55-35. They host sub-section rival Holdingford next Tuesday night in their next game.

Mainstreeters girls basketball wins season opener in a blowout vs. Minnewaska Area

In their season opener for the most highly-anticipated season at Sauk Centre in school history, the Mainstreeters girls basketball team traveled west to face section rival Minnewaska Area and came home with a 59-22 win.

Up next for the Streeters girls basketball team: a trip to Hopkins High School on Saturday where they'll take on Bloomington Jefferson in the annual Breakdown Tip-Off Invitational. Tip-off is at 1:15pm. The Jaguars (2-0) are ranked #5 in the preseason Class AAAA state rankings. They finished 11-15 in the 2009-2010 season.

The Streeters, defending conference champions, open West Central North Conference action next Tuesday at Albany.

The Streeters boys basketball team, under first-year head coach Mike Ellens, will begin their season tonight (Friday) when they take on Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in the conference opener at home. Tip-off is at 7:30pm. This will be the last year that LP-GE is a member of the WCCN, as they are joining the Prairie Conference in 2011.

The Prairie Centre North Stars hockey team begins their season tonight as well, when they make a short trip to the west to play Alexandria. The defending Section 6A champion Cardinals went 21-8-1 last year, losing in two games in the Class A state tournament.
