Macy Weller had 17 points and the Mainstreeters shot well from three-point range Thursday to beat Melrose 71-47 in the Sub-Section 6AA North playoff opener. Weller added six rebounds and six steals.
Sauk built a stead half-time lead thanks to a potent three-point shooting attack. Ali Peterson, Weller, Jena Klaphake and Liz Ellens all made three-pointers within a four-minute span.
Brianna Von Wahlde turned in a solid performance with 13 points. Ellens finished with 11. Klaphake led the team with 5 assists.
The Streeters will face Osakis (22-3) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at St. John's University. The Silverstreaks beat Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 65-41 Thursday. Osakis defeated the Streeters (24-2) earlier this season 49-40. Also advancing in Sub-Section 6AA North was top-seeded Staples-Motley (20-5) who defeated Holdingford 83-50 Thursday. They will face Albany (24-3) at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John's University. Albany beat Pierz 74-45 Thursday.
The top four seeds are a combined 90-13 heading into Saturday's play --- which means two very good teams will be going home.
