Baseball squad wins 4th in a row

Shay Mieczkowski hit a solo home run in the second inning and Tyler Berling and Adam Polipnick combined to hold New London-Spicer to one run in a 2-1 win for the Mainstreeters Friday in Sauk Centre.

Mieczkowski's blast cleared the right field wall to tie the game at 1-1. Berling started on the hill and went five innings, scattering five hits and striking out two. Polipnick pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn the save.

Polipnick and Berling also played a role in the winning run. In the fourth inning Berling and Polipnick both singled. With Berling on second and Polipnick on first the Wildcats catcher misplayed a pitch at his feet. Berling broke for third, but stopped. Polipnick thought Berling was going and made his way to second. With Polipnick caught in a rundown Berling took off for third and the throw sailed past the third baseman, allowing Berling to score.

Polipnick was part of another interesting play to end the game. With a Wildcat on second, a New London hitter bounced a ball to first baseman David Moe with two outs in the seventh. Polipnick, who was pitching, broke to cover first, but the runner beat him to the bag, sliding head first. The runner on second rounded third and tried to score but Polipnick turned and fired a bullet to catcher Shane Trattles who applied the tag to end the game.

The win improved Sauk's record to 7-6 overall and 6-5 in the WCC North. They will host Osakis Monday at 4:30 before traveling to Mora Tuesday. On Thursday the Streeters will play a doubleheader in St. Cloud against St. Cloud Cathedral.
