Trent Berscheit ran for three touchdowns, and Austin Landkammer
ran for a 55-yard TD as the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters defeated Yellow Medicine
East 35-12 in their season opener at O’Gara Field.
Berscheit, a senior 190-pound running back, had TD runs of
6, 1 and 26 yards to help give the Streeters their first win on the young
season.
Berscheit got the scoring started in the first quarter with
a 6-yard TD run. The drive was highlighted by a 29-yard run by halfback Austin
Nelson, who also turned in a solid game from the backfield. Josh Buschette
split the uprights for first of his five extra points and Sauk led 7-0.
But YME came back, controlling the ball for much of the end
of the first quarter and most of the second quarter. Twice the Streeters had
them on fourth down, but YME converted both times. On 3rd and 1 from
the Streeter 1-yard line Landkammer penetrated the YME line and tackled the
running back for a 3-yard loss. Then on 4th and 4, YME committed an
illegal motion penalty. Facing 4th and 9 from the nine, though, they
were able to convert on a pass in the end zone for a touchdown. At first the
referee signaled no catch, but after the referees met to discuss the play they
said the receiver had control of the ball before he went out of bounds and the
score was deemed good.
But the Streeters blocked the extra point and led 7-6.
Sauk didn’t run their first offensive play of the second
quarter until the 5:55 mark. On 3rd and 21 quarterback Seth Otte
completed a 20-yard pass to junior receiver Matthew Moritz. Then on 4th
and 1 from their own 44-yard line,
Berscheit looked as though he was going to be stopped short of the first down,
but a strong second effort got the yardage needed to keep the Streeter drive
alive.
Landkammer then took a direct snap on the next play and
scattered in from 55 yards out for a 13-6 lead. Another Buschette extra point
made it 14-6.
After a solid return by YME on the ensuing kick, YME tried
to throw deep, but the pass was picked off by Moritz who returned it to the
Streeter 32-yard line. Landkammer and Berscheit then had big gains. Landkammer
had a 28-yard run and Berscheit netted 26 yards on a pass from Otte. Otte later
connected with Buschette for a nine yard gain to the YME one yard line where
Berscheit danced in for a 20-6 lead with 28 seconds to play in the half. Buschette’s
boot made it 21-6.
In the third quarter the Streeters went up 28-6 when Otte
connected with Buschette on a long pass. Buschette simply outran his defender
and coasted into the end zone and added his own extra point for a 28-6 lead.
Sauk then capped off their scoring after Moritz had a nice
kick return to the YME 26-yard line. On the next play Berscheit ran it in for a
34-6 lead. Buschette once again was on the money with the extra point for a
35-6 lead.
YME added a touchdown late for a final of 35-12.
