A state-ranked Paynesville Bulldogs and posted a 54-26 win over the Sauk Centre football team Friday in Paynesville. The Mainstreeters (1-4) hung tough and had an outstanding first half, trailing 14-8 after the first quarter and 26-14 at halftime. The Bulldogs opened it up in the second half and outscored Sauk Centre 28-12 to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Paynesville's star senior quarterback Matthew Quade had 20 completions on 34 attempts for 342 yards with no interceptions.
Sauk Centre was led by Austin Nelson's 77 rushing yards and quarterback Simon Weller's 176 passing yards on 14-of-26 attempts with two interceptions and three touchdown passes.
The Mainstreeters head to Grove City this week for week six to face Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, who lost 20-18 to Melrose Area on Friday at Melrose.
At Minnewaska on Saturday, the Mainstreeters girls' tennis team competed in the West Central Conference tournament. Here are the finishes for the seven team positions: Morgan Kranz 3rd at first singles; Hope Schwinghamer 5th at two singles; Faith Henry 5th at three singles; Dani Reiter 6th at four singles; Jessica Rodenbiker / Molly Weyer 6th at first doubles; Abby Welberg / Nicole Meyer 2nd at two doubles; Tami Middendorf / Taylor Danielson 5th at three doubles.
