At Minnewaska Area, the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters football team lost 38-22 to the third-seeded Lakers in the Section 5-2A quarterfinals tonight. The Mainstreeters led 22-8 at halftime but faded in the second half.
The Lakers (5-4) tied the game up before the third quarter ended at 22-22 and then poured it on in the fourth quarter to advance to face second-seeded BOLD on Saturday in the semifinal round.

Spirited effort fades, playoffs next
Against a state-ranked BOLD Warriors team to end the regular season, the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters football team had a tall order and gave all they had in Olivia in a 28-7 loss. The Warriors had a 14-7 lead until scoring with 10:18 left in the game on a 52-yard touchdown run. That play was good for almost one-fourth of their total offense in the game (218 yards).
Unofficial statistics: Austin Nelson was the leading rusher for Sauk Centre with 21 carries for 60 yards; he scored the team's lone touchdown in the second quarter. They were three-of-13 on third-down conversions and one-for-five on fourth-down conversions. Sauk Centre had 176 total yards of offense with time-of-possession at 20 minutes, 34 seconds. They had nine first downs on the night.
BOLD was looking to lock up the number two seed in Section 5AA. The Mainstreeters likely will get the number six seed for Section 5AA and open up on the road at third-seeded Minnewaska Area. The Lakers drubbed Yellow Medicine East in Granite Falls tonight to improve to 4-4 overall.

Homecoming loss
The Mainstreeters made a valiant comeback tonight, but their efforts fell just short as they lost their homecoming game to rival Melrose 41-27.
Sauk trailed early when Melrose scored the first three touchdowns of the game and led 20-0. But the Streeters stormed back and by the fourth quarter were within a touchdown at 33-27. But Melrose punched in a final touchdown to seal the deal, sending the Streeters to 1-6 on the season.
Sauk will play BOLD next Friday in their final regular season game.

Falcons down Streeters
Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City defeated Sauk Centre 33-15 tonight in a West Central Conference football game. The Mainstreeters held a 15-12 lead at halftime before the Falcons posted 21 unanswered points in the second half. Sauk Centre scored first on a ninety-five yard run by Austin Nelson with a Will Funk PAT kick to make it 7-0. Nelson ran in a second touchdown and caught a two-point conversion pass to make it 15-6 in the second quarter. The game had just one turnover: a lost fumble by the Mainstreeters.
A-C-GC, always known for having a powerful running attack, ran for 387 yards on 49 carries while getting 16 yards on one pass play. Of their 50 plays from scrimmage, just one was a pass play.
The Mainstreeters posted impressive offensive yardage as well but had trouble finding the end zone after halftime. For the game they had an unofficial total of 246 rushing yards and 167 passing yards.

Bulldogs vs. Mainstreeters
A state-ranked Paynesville Bulldogs and posted a 54-26 win over the Sauk Centre football team Friday in Paynesville. The Mainstreeters (1-4) hung tough and had an outstanding first half, trailing 14-8 after the first quarter and 26-14 at halftime. The Bulldogs opened it up in the second half and outscored Sauk Centre 28-12 to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Paynesville's star senior quarterback Matthew Quade had 20 completions on 34 attempts for 342 yards with no interceptions.
Sauk Centre was led by Austin Nelson's 77 rushing yards and quarterback Simon Weller's 176 passing yards on 14-of-26 attempts with two interceptions and three touchdown passes.
The Mainstreeters head to Grove City this week for week six to face Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, who lost 20-18 to Melrose Area on Friday at Melrose.

A tough season-opening loss
The Sauk Centre Mainstreeters had a tough outing in their football season opener against Minnewaska Area on the home turf. The Lakers left town with a 28-12 win that avenged their 40-7 playoff-opening loss last year to Sauk Centre.
Starting the game with the ball, the Mainstreeters suffered a lost fumble on their second play from scrimmage. The Lakers proceeded to drive 49 yards on seven plays to post the first touchdown of the game. With about nine minutes left, Greg Helander ran 20 yards for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead.
On Sauk Centre's second drive of the game, they managed just seven yards of offense and punted.
As the first quarter was coming to a close, Minnewaska converted third down with an 18-yard reception. Then with 11:13 left in the second quarter, Helander ran in another touchdown for the Lakers, this time from three yards out. Austin VerSteeg hauled in the two-point conversion for a 14-0 lead to cap a 14-play, 63-yard drive.
On Sauk Centre's third drive of the game, they started from their own 40 with great field position after the kickoff. Austin Nelson plowed his way for seven yards on a fourth-and-inches play at midfield. Later on third-and-nine on the Minnewaska Area 29-yard line, an incomplete pass brought fourth down. The Lakers then earned a quarterback sack with a 12-yard loss.
The Lakers ended up punting on their next possession to the Sauk Centre 19. Cole Neubert then converted his team's first third down of the game at their own 31-yard line. A few plays later Sauk Centre attempted to convert a fourth-and-two play near midfield but got stuffed on the play.
Minnewaska Area capitalized on the miscue when quarterback Michael Gruber hit VerSteeg with a 37-yard touchdown catch with 18.8 seconds left. VerSteeg ran in the two-point conversion and gave the visitors a 22-0 lead going into halftime.
With about one minute left in the third quarter, Minnewaska Area got a four-yard touchdown run for a 28-0 lead.
With about 9:30 left, Nelson busted up the shut out with a one-yard touchdown run. The failed PAT kick made it 28-6.
In the final minutes, Sauk Centre drove 99 yards and scored on a seven-yard reception by Will Funk from relief quarterback Jay Friedrichs with just eight-tenths of a second on the clock.

Sauk Centre ball carriers totaled 220 yards of rushing on 38 rushes. Leading rusher was Austin Nelson with 155 yards on the ground.

Streeters dominate Lakers 40-7
The Sauk Centre football team avenged a loss to Minnewaska on homecoming night by eliminating the Lakers Tuesday in a 40-7 win in Morris. The win pits the Streeters against top-seeded Paynesville in Paynesville on Saturday. Paynesville beat the Streeters 60-6 earlier this season, but head coach Charlie Warring said the Streeters will head into Paynesville with a different attitude and a different game plan this time around. Playoff game change
The Minnewaska vs. Sauk Centre Section 5AA football playoff game tomorrow night will be held on the University of Minnesota-Morris campus at Big Cat Stadium.
Minnewaska, the number four seed, was to host the game, but Veterans Field is still flooded on the south end as of Monday afternoon.
Sauk Centre (4-4), the number five seed, is gunning for their first playoff win since 2011 when they were runners-up in Section 6AA.

Mainstreeters football loses at Paynesville
The Mainstreeters fell prey to one of the area's most prolific offenses in Paynesville on Friday night in a game that had over a two-hour lightning delay. At halftime, the Bulldogs led 38-0. Final score: Paynesville Area 60, Sauk Centre 6.
To close out the regular season, Sauk Centre hosts Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City next Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Falcons are 5-2 overall after trampling Yellow Medicine East 54-0 last night.

First half lead for Sauk Centre on Homecoming night vanishes
At the end of the first quarter, Minnewaska and Sauk Centre were tied 6-6 on Homecoming night at O'Gara Field. The Lakers got their touchdown with 59 seconds on the clock in the first quarter. Trent Berscheit scored a two-yard run in the first quarter for the game's first points.
Sauk Centre then scored in the second quarter to take a 13-6 lead on a touchdown carry by Austin Nelson. They've earned nine first downs so far in the game. With 1:26 left on the clock, they're sitting with a 3rd-and-6 possession at midfield. The Lakers thwarted a pass attempt to force a fourth down, and the Lakers punted to the Lakers 19-yard line.
Austin Ostrander struck with an 81-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Beecher on Minnewaska's first play of their next drive. The ball was caught at about the Sauk Centre 45-yard line, and Beecher went the distance untouched to score with 58 seconds left before halftime.
Ostrander then called his own number and ran in the two-point conversion to make it a 14-13 Minnewaska Area lead. That score stood at halftime.
At Collegeville, Paynesville has a 16-0 lead over Melrose Area in the first half.

Ostrander ran in a one-yard touchdown run with 4:37 left in the third quarter. Their extra-point attempt (2 points) failed to make it a 20-13 game.

What an improbable comeback!
Trailing 29-14 with around 6 minutes left in the game, the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters put up one of the most impressive comebacks in football you could ask for.

Mainstreeters football team is 2-0
The long road home from Montevideo wasn't quite so bad tonight after the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters football team picked up a 43-27 win over the Thunderhawks. It was an impressive win considering that Montevideo led 7-6 at halftime. The Mainstreeters scored 14 points in the game's final minutes to break up what was a very tense game.
Now 2-0, Sauk Centre travels to Big Cat Stadium in Morris to face the Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta Tigers for week three action.

Mainstreeters football season ends in section quarterfinals
The third-seeded Litchfield Dragons built a 26-0 halftime lead on their way to picking up a 40-6 win over the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters football team on Tuesday night. The Mainstreeters finished their season 2-7 overall and were seeded number six in the Section 6-3A playoffs.
The Dragons (4-5) advance to the semifinal round to play #2-seeded New London-Spicer in New London on Saturday.

Playoffs begin on Tuesday for the Mainstreeters football team
The 6th-seeded Sauk Centre Mainstreeters (2-6) open up the Section 6-3A football playoffs at 3rd-seeded Litchfield (3-5) on Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta (8-0) is the top seed and has a first-round bye.

Mainstreeter football team loses sixth straight
Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City wasn't exactly in a warm, friendly mood as hosts to the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters tonight. After building a 32-0 halftime lead, the Falcons decided to win 60-7 to complete a 6-2 regular season.
A-C-GC takes a number one seed into the Section 4A playoffs.
Sauk Centre finished the regular season 2-6 overall and is seeded #6 in the seven-team Section 6AAA standings. They travel to New London-Spicer (4-4, #3 seed) next Tuesday, Oct. 23 for a 7 p.m. game.

Streeter football drops 4th in a row
Final on the road tonight: Minnewaska Area 45, Sauk Centre 20.
The Mainstreeters (2-4) led 14-13 briefly in the first half, but the Lakers went up 19-14 before halftime.
It was all Minnewaska in the second half, though, as the Lakers won their second game in a row after an 0-4 start to the season.
