Fall sports get underway

Fall sports preseason practices are underway at SCHS this week.

The Sauk Centre Mainstreeters cross country teams are gearing up for the season opener, which is at Morris Area on Monday, Aug. 25 at Pomme de Terre golf course.

Cross country season ends at sections

Sauk Centre's cross country season ended today at the Section 6A meet, with no one advancing to state.

Kelli Lewis was the lead runner for the Mainstreeters. She finished 20th out of 135 runners with a time of 16:39. Joe Gerhartz led the boys' squad with a 61st place finish out of 142 runners.

Today's competition was held at the Long Prairie Country Club with 19 schools in action.

Cross Country conference meet postponed

Due to wet conditions after days and days of rain throughout central Minnesota, the West Central Conference cross country championships will be held on Wednesday instead of today. The meet hosted by Yellow Medicine East begins at 4 p.m. in Granite Falls.

Cross Country meet Tuesday

The Mainstreeters volleyball team defeated Montevideo in a road match tonight by a 3-0 score. They host Yellow Medicine East on Tuesday.

On Tuesday at Paynesville's Koronis Golf Course, the Mainstreeters cross country teams compete in a 12-team meet. The varsity girls' race starts at 4:45 p.m., while the boys' race starts at 5:15 p.m.

Varsity action tonight

The Mainstreeters volleyball team travels to Olivia to face undefeated BOLD in a West Central Conference match.

The Mainstreeters cross country teams compete at NL-S in a 4:30 p.m. meet at Little Crow Golf Course.

The Mainstreeters girls' tennis team competes at Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg with a 4:30 p.m. conference match.

Coming tonight: an interview with Coach Schreiner of the girls' swimming and diving team, as we hear a little overview of their huge win over Alexandria on Tuesday night.

Mainstreeter girls' cross country 6th at LPGE

The Sauk Centre cross country teams competed in their second meet of the season at Long Prairie tonight.

The top girls' finisher for Sauk Centre was Madison Greenwaldt, who took seventh with a time of 16:56.79. As a team, the Mainstreeter girls finished sixth out of 11 teams with a score of 166. St. Cloud Cathedral won the division with a score of 26.

The top Sauk Centre finisher on the boys' side was Kyle Rutten, who placed 20th with a time of 19:22.15. As a team, the Mainstreeter boys finished 10th out of 12 teams with a score of 226. Holdingford won the division with a score of 70.

Swimming and diving wins at St. Cloud, Cross Country teams do well at Holdingford

The Mainstreeters cross country teams competed in their first action of the season at Holdingford tonight. The girls' squad placed fourth, while the boys' team finished in fifth place. Up next: a meet in Long Prairie on Monday.

At St. Cloud tonight, the Mainstreeters girls' swimming and diving team defeated St. Cloud Cathedral/St. John's Prep 103-71. They won every event on the night up until exhibition scoring was used. Up next: a meet in Alexandria next Tuesday at the Discovery pool against the Cardinals in a Section 6A match up.

New head coaches named

T.J. Schmiesing is the new head coach of the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters softball team.

For cross country, Rachel Gerhartz replaces now-retired Tom Trutna as head coach.

Mainstreeters cross country teams seasons end at sections

At the Section 6A meet today in New London (Little Crow Golf Course), the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters Cross Country teams competed against a tough field of teams, including powerhouses such as Holdingford and Albany.

Madison Greenwaldt was the highest finisher for both squads by taking 15th in the girls' division. She missed out on making the state meet by one place.

Mainstreeters cross country open season at Morris

The boys' team finished sixth out of 11 squads, while the girls' team took ninth out of 15 with only four total runners at the Pomme de Terre Golf Course in rural Morris on Monday night. Maren Greenwaldt led all Sauk Centre runners with a 9th-place finish individually (16:48).

Jacob Gerhartz medals at State Cross Country meet!

In a superb performance at the state cross country meet this afternoon, senior Jacob Gerhartz ran a 16:19.2 race and took seventh place individually to earn a Top-10 medal. A total of 150 male athletes competed in the race.

Eighth grader Madison Greenwaldt placed 80th with a race of 16:19.0. A total of 156 female athletes competed in the race.

Gerhartz wins conference cross country title; Girls' swimming and diving crushes Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta/Minnewaska Area

The Mainstreeters swimming and diving team won 115-53 in a non-conference meet at Minnewaska Area high school. They are now 11-1 in dual meets on the season, as they prepare for the Section 6A playoffs over the second weekend of November.

At New London in the West Central North Conference meet, Jacob Gerhartz's time of 16:52 earned him the individual conference title. He finished the race a full 36 seconds ahead of runner-up Seth Hare from Albany.

Leading the Mainstreeters girls' squad were Elizabeth Hemsworth (4th place, 16:28) and Madison Greenwaldt (5th place, 16:32).

Teams included are Wheaton/Herman-Norcross, Albany, Benson, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Minnewaska Area, Rocori, Staples-Motley and Wadena-Deer Creek.

The varsity run begins at 4:30 p.m.

At the Milaca Mega Meet on Saturday, Elizabeth Hemsworth paced the Mainstreeters with a 14th place finish in the Class A division with a time of 16:02.6.

Mainstreeters cross country opens season at Morris - Gerhartz wins the boys' race


At the Pomme de Terre Golf Course in rural Morris, the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters cross country teams opened the 2011 campaign and had some very good results turned in.

The boys' squad finished seventh, with senior Jacob Gerhartz running away with the individual title. He ran a 16:36 to beat the runner-up by a whopping 24 seconds. Last year, according to Coach Trutna, Gerhartz ran a 17:26 at this meet.

The top female runner for Sauk Centre was eighth grader Madison Greenwaldt, who placed sixth with a time of 16:46.

Up next for the Mainstreeters harriers: a trip to Holdingford on Thursday, September 8.
