This year's Streeter team was a special group
The Sauk Centre Mainstreeter volleyball team was on the
brink of yet another state tournament berth, but fell just short Saturday
afternoon at St. Ben’s University with a 3-1 loss to Dassel-Cokato.
The Streeters made a valiant effort against D-C’s hard-hitting
attack. After being down 2-0, they came back and won game three and had a lead
in game four before falling 25-23.
The Streeter effort was admirable. Coming into the game they
knew it would be a tough team to beat. They have relied on their defense all
year and it came through again on Saturday. They also had great offensive
output from several girls who made this match closer than what it appeared it
would be on paper.
With eight seniors playing their final game, this team
should be proud for several reasons. One is most of them played with limited,
if any, varsity experience and went undefeated in conference play. Secondly,
they made it to yet another section final, despite having only one returning
starter.
Setters Amanda Kulzer and Katelyn Durbin proved to be an
efficient 1-2 punch. Ali Peterson came through with several big kills down the
stretch. Outside hitter Alea Gerhartz and middle hitter Amanda Weir showed just
how talented Streeter teams of the past two years have been. Both players would
have been key starters on most 2A teams throughout the state, but were
relegated to junior varsity action until this year. Meghan Orth was a presence
in the middle and Ashlee Denny was a formidable outside hitter who was also the
heart and soul of the bench, always bringing the girls together.
And lets not forget Katie Reitsma, the only returner who
earned all-state honors with her outstanding play this season.
We will have much more in next week’s Herald, but for now
let’s just say it was another great run for another great Streeter team.
Congratulations to the girls and the coaches on another exciting year of Sauk
Centre volleyball. Just because we aren’t punching a ticket to St. Paul does
not mean this season wasn’t successful. There is absolutely no reason for this special group to hang
their heads. 15-0 in conference. 28-4 overall. To put up those numbers with one
returning starter is unbelievable, and a testament to the volleyball program
and those who take the court and give nothing less than their very best. There
aren’t many teams who can say they went 15-0 in conference and 28-4 overall
with a bunch of girls with hardly any varsity experience. Then again, there
aren’t many teams as special as this one.

The final score was 25-21 in the Section 6AA volleyball match.
The Mainstreeters played neck-and-neck with the Chargers through game two, holding leads at various times before trailing 22-20. They cut it to 23-22 before D-C scored the last two points in a 25-22 win.
**Update: the match went four games, but the Chargers took game four by a 25-23 score.

Streeter volleyball back in state polls
It didn't take long for Sauk Centre's volleyball team to land itself back in the Class 2A state rankings, a place they remained for the entire 2012 season when they finished third at the state tournament in November.
In yesterday's polls, the Mainstreeters (5-0) were ranked 15th. Not far in front of them is Dassel-Cokato, sitting at 12th, a team that could challenge Sauk Centre in a section championship if both win their respective sub-sections.
One other West Central Conference team is receiving votes for state rankings. BOLD (3-0) is 17th in the Class 1A rankings. The Warriors finished as Section 2A runners-up last year and advanced to the state tournament in 2011.

Streeters take third!
The Sauk Centre volleyball squad ended their season in a winning fashion Saturday with a 3-2 win over Belle Plaine in the third place game at the state volleyball tournament.
There may not have been two more evenly matched teams in the tourney the Tigers took game one 25-23 before Sauk rallied to take game two 25-17. Game three was another close battle with Sauk edging the Tigers 26-24. The Streeters led that game 24-20 only to watch the Tigers tied it up, but finished them off for the win to even the match. Game four was all Belle Plaine. The game was tied 14-14 when the Tigers went on an 11-3 run to force a deciding game five. Game five was another battle as the teams traded points to a 9-9 tie. Belle Plaine took an 11-9 lead when consecutive kills by Macy Weller and Kendra Zenzen tied it up. Weller added two more kills for a 13-11 lead. Sauk earned another point on a bad set and then the Tigers scored two straight for a 14-13 Streeter lead. Sauk called a timeout and then it was Weller once again, finishing off the season and a magnificent career with a set from Jena Klaphake and a kill for a 15-13 win.
Weller finished with 23 kills as four different Streeters had at least a dozen kills. Ashley Kollman and Brianna VonWahlde each had 13 kills and Zenzen had 12. Klaphake had 59 set assists. Kollman led with 28 digs and Katie Reitsma had 27. The Streeters finish their season with just one blemish, a loss last night to Caledonia. Their record of 33-1 is the best record in school history for the volleyball squad and the second time the Streeter volleyball program has finished third. Today's win also marked the third straight year at state, finishing fourth in 2010 and fifth in 2011. Ten seniors will graduate from this year's team, but they will never be forgotten for their three trips to state and the memories they have made for Streeter fans.
For her efforts at state, Macy Weller earned a spot on the 10-member Wells Fargo All-Tournament team.
Check out this week's Sauk Centre Herald for a game by game recap and reaction from players and coaches, plus lots of great photos.
