Streeters rally past Crusaders

When Sauk Centre puts all facets of the game together, they will be tough to beat. After a slow start tonight against St. Cloud Cathedral, the Streeter volleyball squad rallied for 3 straight wins en route to a 3-1 victory to improve to 7-2 in WCC play.
Sauk lost game won by a wide 25-13 margin. Okay, they got kicked. Knocked down. But they got back up. They won game two 25-18 and an ever-important game three 25-22 which gave them momentum going into game four, which they won 25-18.
Just about every player had a shining moment in tonight's match, with every team member making contributions.
With the score 23-22 in game three, Kendra Zenzen made a diving dig to keep the ball in play on a Crusader kill attempt. Krista Primus then put it down for a 24-22 lead and an eventual win.
In the deciding game four Kali Peschel took over as the Crusaders couldn't defend the 6'1" junior middle hitter. Sauk trailed 12-6 in this one, but a Shelby Deters block got them back on track. A Primus tip and sideline kill eventually got the Streeters to within two at 13-11 before Deters tied it moments later with a kill. Emily Petermeier added a big kill and then Peschel five kills in the team's final 10 points.
Peschel finished with 15 kills and Primus added 11. Deters had 9, Petermeier finished with 7 and Zenzen, who has emerged as a sophomore, finished with 6. Zenzen also had 19 digs to lead the team. Peschel and Deters each had four ace blocks and Jena Klaphake had 23 assists and berscheit 13. Lexie Berscheit also came up with several solid defensive plays to keep the ball alive, giving hitters like Peschel, Primus and Deters chances. She finished with 13 digs and was also 16-for-16 serving. Jenna Beste was also perfect from the service line, going 17-for-17. Ashley Kollman also saw ample action in two games and recorded 7 digs. Kourtney Nelson also came up with a big kill to help lead the Streeters.

A moral victory for young Streeter football team

I'll admit it. I didn't think our Sauk Centre football team had any chance tonight against the defending state champion Wildcats from New London-Spicer. I thought that maybe I'd even make it home by 8:30 to catch the end of the Twins game.
Well, I didn't get home until close to 10 p.m., and even though both the Twins and Streeters lost tonight, it was our the 26 kids dressed in maroon who impressed more than Mauer and Company.
I know it's cliche to call a 16-point loss a moral victory, but that's what tonight was for the Streeters. It might have ended 28-12, but it was 20-12 with 9:00 left in the game and the Streeters had the ball in Wildcat territory — this against the defending state champs mind you.
The Streeters called a halfback option, where QB Michael Knoblauch handed off to sophomore running back Roosevelt Austin, who then threw downfield to a receiver who was wide open on the sideline. But the play was whistled dead because of a penalty. The Streeters turned the ball over shortly thereafter and New London went down and scored.
Had that play worked, we might be talking about a major upset. But even though it didn't work out in the Streeters' favor, it was a great learning experience for those 26 kids who put their necks on the line every Friday night. It is clear they are getting better. And their work ethic has gotten stronger with each game. They are well coached and they have a bright future. Tonight was just a step. And even though it was a loss, for the football program, it was a step in the right direction.

No. 4 Wadena shuts out Streeters

The Mainstreeter volleyball team's win Tuesday over Albany gave them lone possession of first place in the West Central Conference, but they ran into No. 4 ranked Wadena Thursday and were shut down 3-0.

The Streeters played a tough first game that went to 62 points, but it was Wadena who prevailed, winning 32-30. Sauk then lost the next two games by identical scores of 25-14.
Krista Primus had five kills, 7 digs and was 10-for-10 serving. Macy Weller had seven kills and five blocks and Shelby Deters added six kills and six blocks.

Kendra Zenzen chipped in 11 digs and Jena Klaphake led with 15 assists.

The loss dropped Sauk's record to 14-4 on the season.

Streeter tennis squad battles for conference title

The Sauk Centre tennis squad, coached by Bruce Jarvi, was vying for its second consecutive conference title yesterday against Foley.
But it was the Falcons who prevailed, beating the Mainstreeters 6-1. The lone win for Sauk Centre came at No. 2 doubles from Meghan Duchene and Mariah Rieland. Sauk Centre's No. 1 singles player Laura Hintzen lost in a tiebreaker.
The loss was only the Streeters third on the year (17-3). They also finished with a 5-1 conference record.
They will battle Osakis Thursday in Osakis and then compete in the West Central Conference tournament Saturday in Foley.

Sauk Centre Mainstreeters volleyball takes sole possession of first place in the West Central North Conference

The Streeters won in four games over visiting Albany tonight in a clash of first place teams in the conference.

St.Cloud Cathedral is only a half match back in the race, sitting at 5-1 in the WCCN after sweeping Foley tonight.

Sauk Centre is 6-1 in the WCCN (14-3 overall), while Albany falls to 5-2 in the league and 10-5 overall.

Conference rivalry resumes tonight - Sauk Centre volleyball to host Albany

Two volleyball teams atop the West Central North Conference will clash tonight to see who can get an edge in the conference title race.

The Sauk Centre Mainstreeters (#16-ranked Class AA) will host the 10-4 Albany Huskies tonight. Both teams are tied for first place with 5-1 WCCN records. St.Cloud Cathedral is a half match behind them at 4-1; they host Foley tonight.

Friday Night Football: Mora 25, Streeters 6

Last week against St. Cloud Cathedral the Streeter defense forced five turnovers, but tonight against Mora they couldn't stop the run as they fell 25-6 in their homecoming game.

After a scoreless first quarter Mora went up 7-0, but the Streeters marched back down the field and Roosevelt Austin capped off the drive with a TD run. But that was all the Streeters would be able to muster the rest of the night. After missing the extra point, Sauk never got close to the end zone the rest of the way.

The Streeters are still hobbling. In addition to fullback/linebacker Sam Fischer being sidelined for the year, sophomore defensive back/quarterback Patrick Knoblauch is also on the shelf with a right shoulder injury.

And junior quarterback Michael Knoblauch continues to run with a noticeable limp as he fights a bad ankle. Austin also was banged up this past week.
