The Sauk Centre Mainstreeters football team fought valiantly down the stretch, forcing overtime after both teams traded scoreless possessions throughout the fourth quarter of regulation play.
In the end, BOLD held Sauk Centre from scoring in the second overtime period.
Some first half notes from the game...
BOLD scored first on a 21-yard touchdown during its opening drive that lasted 6:00 in the first quarter. PAT unsuccessful.
Sauk Centre's Sam Fischer busted loose for a 65-yard touchdown on the Streeters' second play of the game. PAT was good for a brief 7-6 Streeters lead.
At the fullback position, Fischer had 7 carries for 98 yards in the first half.
Streeters QB Mike Knoblauch was knocked out of the game for a period of time while playing defense during BOLD's second series of the game. His younger brother Pat relieved him at QB.
Sauk Centre's sophomore sensation Roosevelt Austin had 7 carries for 50 yards in the first half.
BOLD scored for a second time on its second series of the first quarter on a 21-yard field goal.
BOLD's quarterback (Athmann) was 7-of-9 for 116 yards and 1 touchdown up to the final 2 minutes of the first half.
Radio comment: Sauk Centre's brawny defensive line was "manhandling" BOLD's interior O-line...forcing BOLD to either pass or run around the outside.
With under 5:23 left in the first half... BOLD ran to midfield with 3:30 left but Sauk forced a punt on their next set of downs. Streeters took over from their own 18 yard line with 2:20 left in the first half. BOLD earned a fumble recovery, though, deep in Streeters' territory. It didn't look good for Sauk.
With under 2:00 left, BOLD had a third-and-three possession but was stuffed for no gain. On fourth-and-three on the Sauk Centre 11, BOLD attempted a field goal. Kicking from the 17-yard line, the field goal sailed wide left. Sauk put good pressure on the kicker that might have caused the shanked attempt. 1:26 was left on the clock.
Sauk Centre had success running the ball for a first down at their own 35-yard line. They got it down to a 4th-and-6 (after a penalty) and elected to punt with 11 seconds left.
BOLD had one play but it didn't yield anything.
Halftime: BOLD 9, Sauk Centre 7.
Read more on the second half of the game, plus both overtime periods, in the next issue of the Sauk Centre Herald. It will be rolling off of the presses by mid-day on Friday.
