Streeters beat St. James -- Melrose on deck

The Mainstreeter football team had a long haul ahead of them Friday afternoon, traveling all the way to St. James for a non-conference match up.
But at least the ride back was an enjoyable one.
The Streeters scored 29 first-half points on their way to a 35-6 win.
It was Sauk's second win of the season as they improved to 2-5.

Meanwhile, they're next opponent, Melrose, defeated Minnewaska with a late touchdown Friday to also improve to 2-5.

Whats it all mean?

The two teams will collide Wednesday for the regular season finale.

It should make for a classic battle between the crosstown rivals. The game is Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Melrose.

Don't miss it! And if you do, catch it on 105.5 FM and be sure to check the Streeter Sports Blog for results.

Big comeback = conference title

Below, the Mainstreeters get pumped up prior to taking the court against B-B-E earlier this month...they clinched the West Central North Conference title outright for the first time since 2001 and the first time under head coach Jim Klaphake.

The Streeter volleyball squad lost their first two games against Albany Thursday night, but staved off a 3-1 defeat in a close fourth game, and then rallied for a game 5 win to win 3-2, clinching the West central Conference North title.

Sauk lost game one 25-20 and game two 25-19. Game three went to Sauk 25-16. But it was game four that was a back-and-forth battle until Sauk pulled off a 30-28 win. The momentum from that victory carried over to game 5, which they won handily 15-5.

The win gives them their first outright conference title under Jim Klaphake's tenure as coach. Last year they shared the conference crown with, who else? Albany.

Macy Weller had 21 kills and four blocks. Kendra Zenzen had 26 digs and Jena Klaphake had 25 set assists.

A great win for the Streeters. Congratulations to the girls and coaching staff!

Activities included will be face painting, door prizes, best "Swim Fan Contest" , chuck-a-duck and a cannonball contest after the meet.

"We're trying to get people out to see a meet that maybe haven't been to one before," commented head coach James Schreiner about his Mainstreeter swimming and diving team's dual meet against Holdingford on Tuesday night this week.

Schreiner added, "The girls are looking forward to the meet. It will be a really fun night. The U of M Women's team does this. I thought 'maybe we should do this' and the girls have taken the idea and ran with it. I've heard that some kids who haven't been to a swim meet say they'll be here for the first time. It should be a charged atmosphere."
