Area football scoreboard from September 2

In week two on September 9, the Mainstreeters football team will host Montevideo at O'Gara Field for the West Central North Conference opener. The Thunderhawks, who are poised to improve on last year's 2-7 record and are seeking their first conference title since 2007, pummeled neighboring rival Lac qui Parle Valley tonight 41-12 in Montevideo. They piled up an unheard of 573 yards of offense, with 283 yards coming on the ground. Montevideo was hampered by 10 penalties for 79 yards, which undoubtedly kept them from scoring into the 50s.

Montevideo was moved to the West Central North this season to help balance out the 14-team West Central Conference after the departure of Mora, Foley, St. Cloud Cathedral, Milaca and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle. The Thunderhawks are a Class AAA team, while this season Sauk Centre is in Class AA.

Look for a full scouting report on the Thunderhawks next week.

Hot night, Cold start

Quinton Johnson needed an ice pack and water as he tried to cool down on the sidelines Thursday against B.O.L.D. Roosevelt Austin (35) also needed a break during Sauk's 54-14 loss.

The Sauk centre football squad opened play Thursday hoping for a hot start to the season.

It was plenty hot, with game time temperatures reaching the mid-80s, but it was opponent B.O.L.D who sizzled their way to a 54-14 win.

B.O.L.D scored the first two TDs of the game and never trailed. The closest the Streeters got was after Patrick Knoblauch connected with Terrence Ellis for a 73-yard touchdown pass. Knoblauch hit Ellis on a quick screen and Ellis raced down the sideline, flying by B.O.L.D. defenders on his way to the end zone.

But B.O.L.D. answered with another touchdown before Knoblauch hooked up with Roosevelt Austin on a 20-yard pass play. Austin broke several tackle son his way to the stripe to bring Sauk to within a touchdown at 20-14. B.O.L.D. would add another touchdown before halftime, but Sauk was still very much in the game.

Terrence Ellis makes his way around end in Thursday's battle against B.O.L.D. Ellis had several good runs, including a 73-yard TD pass from Pat Knoblauch.

However, it was evident the heat was getting to Sauk players. Several players had to come out of the game for breathers and water breaks. With humidity at a high, it appeared the Streeters started to run out of gas midway through the second quarter.

A break at halftime didn't help as B.O.L.D. scored four more times in the final two quarters on their way to an easy win.

Despite the loss, there were several bright spots for Sauk. Terrence Ellis stood out, with runs of 31 and 20 yards and his 73-yard TD reception. Pat Knoblauch threw some good passes and finished 7-for-15 on the night for 130 yards. Sam Fischer made a statement early in the game with his tenacious defense, which caused B.O.L.D. to pretty much run the opposite of where Fischer lined up. Coming off major knee surgery, Fischer looked strong on both sides of the ball.

Senior lineman Sam Fischer tries to strip the ball from an opponent in Thursday's battle. Fischer looked solid in his first game back since suffering a knee injury in the second game of the season in 2010.

Tailback Roosevelt Austin also put together some solid runs, breaking several tackles along the way.

Roosevelt Austin, Sauk's leading rusher in 2010, scored one touchdown on Thursday.

The hope is the bright spots will shine through next Friday when Sauk takes on Montevideo at home at 7 p.m.

INJURY REPORT: Several players had to come out of Thursday's game due to muscle cramps and fatigue. Senior wide receiver/defensive back Derek Holm suffered a shoulder injury in the second quarter and sat out the remainder of the game. His status is uncertain.

For more on Thursday's game be sure to pick up a copy of the Sauk Centre Herald, which hits newsstands next Wednesday, Sept. 7.

Halftime score: BOLD 27, Sauk Centre 14

BOLD's senior running back Zach Remillard has burned up the field to the tune of 23 carries and 168 rushing yards with a five-yard touchdown to boot.

The Warriors have opened up a diverse running attack to counter Sauk Centre's passing game.

BOLD's third-year quarterback Kyle Athmann has gone 7-of-8 in passing for 87 yards.

Sauk Centre's wingbacks Terrance Ellis and Roosevelt Austin have rushed for 53 and 22 yards, respectively. Both have punched in touchdown carries to account for the Mainstreeters' scoring.

Interesting fact: BOLD won the Class B state title in 1991 and finished as Class B runners-up in 1992.

**Second half update...BOLD punched in another touchdown with 3:15 left in the third quarter. It's now 33-14 in favor of the Warriors.

With 6:23 left in the game, the BOLD Warriors had punched in their 7th touchdown of the night. They lead 47-14.

Final score: BOLD 54, Sauk Centre 14. The leading rusher for the Warriors was Zach Remillard, who piled up 204 yards on the ground on 34 carries.

In week two of the regular season, the Mainstreeters will host Montevideo for their West Central North Conference opener on Friday, September 9 at O'Gara Field. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Just over three minutes into the second quarter, Mainstreeters trail 13-7 against BOLD

Terrance Ellis grabbed a 73-yard touchdown strike to cut into a 13-0 deficit with 8:41 left in the second quarter. The radio announcers I was listening to from Olivia were in awe at the speed of Ellis, who outran the BOLD defender and sped down the sideline for the score.

BOLD jumped in front by two touchdowns, the second coming with 9:03 on the clock in the second quarter on a five-yard rush by Remillard.

**With just over five minutes to go in the first half, the BOLD Warriors had gone up 20-7.

On their next series, the Mainstreeters had picked up a couple first downs after starting from their own 37 yard line.

**With 5:15 left in the first half, Sauk Centre's Roosevelt Austin grabbed a shovel pass from Patrick Knoblauch and ran it in for a touchdown. The PAT kick was good to make it 20-14.

There's hope!

Are you ready to rumble? The Mainstreeters football team is! Set to face BOLD, a team that will take to the air Thursday night

The Mainstreeters' opponent will be the BOLD Warriors of Olivia, who play in the West Central South Conference.

Game time is 7 p.m. at O'Gara Field at the Sauk Centre High School.

**BOLD preview updated on Thursday at 7 a.m....
The Warriors are led by senior Kyle Athmann, who led the central Minnesota area around Willmar in passing yardage last season. During his junior season, Athmann connected on 58 of 107 passes for 1,099 yards and 12 touchdowns. He will lead a revamped offense that graduated two 1,000 yard rushers from the 2010 team.

Senior Jacob Marcus is noted as Athmann's top receiver in the flats, while out of the backfield seniors Zach Remillard and Jordan Skeie will be the Warriors' top running backs.

BOLD finished 8-3 last season, including a 6-2 regular season mark and a runner-up finish in Section 5AA. They lost in the section championship to Eden Valley-Watkins 42-7.

In the West Central South, the Warriors finished one game out of first place with a 5-2 record, good for a second place tie with Lac qui Parle Valley. Morris Area won the WCCS with a 6-1 league mark.

According to BOLD head coach Steve Solem, the Warriors were hit hard by graduation in 2010, despite the return of their All-Area quarterback and nine starters overall. The loss of their two 1,000 yard rushers will open up the passing game more so than they did in 2010. All nine returning starters are seniors.

Coach Solem is entering his 25th season at the helm of the BOLD program with a career record of 209-62. In the early 1990s he took two teams to the Prep Bowl, while BOLD most recently advanced as far as the state semifinals in 2004 when they finished 12-1.

"Our football numbers are down a bit this year, just like many other schools are," Solem reported. "We're a little green at some positions."

Solem still feels his team can contend for a conference title, although it may take a few games to get everything clicking.

More will follow later.

Mainstreeters cross country opens season at Morris - Gerhartz wins the boys' race

At the Pomme de Terre Golf Course in rural Morris, the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters cross country teams opened the 2011 campaign and had some very good results turned in.

The boys' squad finished seventh, with senior Jacob Gerhartz running away with the individual title. He ran a 16:36 to beat the runner-up by a whopping 24 seconds. Last year, according to Coach Trutna, Gerhartz ran a 17:26 at this meet.

The top female runner for Sauk Centre was eighth grader Madison Greenwaldt, who placed sixth with a time of 16:46.

Up next for the Mainstreeters harriers: a trip to Holdingford on Thursday, September 8.
