What a way to start the 2012 gridiron season!

The Sauk Centre Mainstreeters football team had a wildly successful debut in the revamped West Central Conference in Granite Falls tonight.

Final score: Sauk Centre 46, Yellow Medicine East 6.

Noteworthy statistics: Roosevelt Austin piled up 196 yards rushing on 17 carries, while Patrick Knoblauch earned 10-for-15 passing marks for 110 yards and no interceptions. The Mainstreeters scored 20 points in both the first and third quarters. Also, YME's score was earned in the first quarter after they fell behind 7-0 out of the gates. Six different Mainstreeters found the end zone. Finally, Sauk Centre won the turnover battle by a 4-1 margin.

The 1-0 Mainstreeters now gear up for another long road trip to Montevideo next Friday night. According to Minnesota-scores.net, the Thunderhawks are 0-1 after losing 42-0 tonight to Paynesville Area on their home field. The Bulldogs limited the Thunderhawks to 40 yards of offense from scrimmage. Ouch.

Football opener is tonight!

The Yellow Medicine East Sting football team is looking to rebound from a disappointing 0-9 season last year when they begin the 2012 season tonight with a home game against the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters. The game is in Granite Falls with a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Sixth-year head coach Mike Gaffaney said about his team, "Coming off an 0-9 season, there will be a lot of questions about returning players and how the season will go."

The Sting have been working hitting the weights in the offseason and having two-a-day preseason practice sessions. They have a 6-6, 275-pound two-way returning tackle in Tim Savig plus a returning senior quarterback in Aaron Lalim.

Streeters swimming and diving, volleyball teams both win on Thursday night

In their West Central Conference opener at Benson on Thursday night, the Sauk Centre volleyball team (ranked #4 in the latest Class AA poll) made quick work of the Braves in a 3-0 sweep. Now 5-0 overall, they host Minnewaska Area next Tuesday for another conference battle.

Game scores were 25-9, 25-12, 25-10. No Benson player had more than 8 kills on the night.

At Little Falls, the Sauk Centre girls' swimming and diving team drubbed the Flyers 105-80 in a non-conference dual. Julie Bushard, Sarah Nelson and Tiana Molitor won four events apiece to lead the Mainstreeters. They host Albany in another non-conference dual next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
