Observations: Sauk vs. Melrose boys hoops

by Bryan Zollman

Some observations from Tuesday night's game:

- The Streeters look 100 percent better on offense
- A healthy Tyler Berling makes the team so much better. It takes pressure off Michael Knoblauch and allows him to find more open shots. Isaac Winters seems to be getting better looks down low. Berling also brings leadership onto the court. He's one of those players who makes those around him better, evidenced by the increase in team scoring the past several games since he returned from an injury.
- Terrence Ellis showed some promise with a great instinctive play in the second half. Ellis followed up on a teammate's errant shot (he came out of nowhere) and in one motion scooped up the rebound and glided in for an easy basket. He looks like he could be a good player down the road if he works hard and builds confidence.
- The Streeters' inexperience shows at times. At one point there were three sophomores on the court in a close game. Melrose's depth really was the difference. The youngsters on this year's Streeters team, however, are gaining valuable experience which should translate into confidence in 2011.
- Sauk did not match up well with Melrose's Reller, whose size and strength in the post translate dinto 22 points.
- Melrose's Jordan Primus was Melrose's best player tonight
- With Bryce Hentges, Isaac Winters and Berling all capable of scoring 15-20, and if Michael Knoblauch can get hot from long range, Sauk could surprise a team or two come playoffs.

Streeter boys battle Dutchmen

Melrose prevailed Tuesday with a big second-half run to beat Sauk Centre in boys hoops.

Sauk led 26-25 at the half, but the Dutchmen went on a 15-2 run. The Streeters simply turned the ball over too many times and Melrose took advantage. The Streeters also played a good portion of the first half of the second half without Tyler Berling who ran into foul trouble.

A Michael Knoblauch "3" brought the Streeters to within six, trailing 47-41 and a baseline kisser off the glass by Bryce Hentges made it 48-43. Terrence Ellis brought the Streeters to within three when he came out of noweher to scoop up a rebound and put it back for a 48-45 score.

But Melrose's Cam Atkinson and Evan Reller hit both ends of their free throws and Jordan Primus sandwiched two-point baskets around a three-pointer to give Melrose a 60-48 lead with under six minutes to play.

That was enough as they held on for the 74-61 win.

Top scorers:
Sauk Centre: Hentges 19, Isaac Winters 15, Tyler Berling 11
Melrose: Reller 22, Primus 13, Carter Sawyer 12

North Stars lose 5-1

by Bryan Zollman

Robby Polipnick scored the lone goal and Nate Mettenburg assisted as the Prairie Centre North Stars lost 5-1 to Northern Lakes (Pequot Lakes Area) in Long Prairie Tuesday.

The team travels to Walker Thursday and will travel to a site to be determined for the section quarters Saturday.

Polipnick's goal was his fourth of the season. Mettenburg's assist was his team-leading 14th.

Streeter wrestlers gear up to host individual sections

By Bryan Zollman

As a team, Sauk Centre's wrestling season is over. But individuals will march on toward the state tournament in early March with individual sections next weekend in Sauk Centre.
The Streeters lost to Holdingford 47-21 Tuesday in the section quarterfinals in Paynesville.
Tommy Latzka won by decision at 125 pounds and John Gusewelle won by pin at 189 pounds. Lucian Grow (152) and Tyler Walther (215) won by forfeit to make up for Sauk's 21 points.

Gusewelle looks to have the best shot at getting through sections and getting down to state. Shane Trattles (125) and Grow, both seniors like Gusewelle, also have chances to go.

If you haven't been to a wrestling meet this year, head to SCHS next Friday and Saturday. Post season wrestling, when everything is on the line — all the cutting weight, running the halls in layers of clothes, eating bananas for lunch and dinner, tireless work in the weight room — is about as intense as it gets.

You will get your moneys worth.

What a comeback!

by Bryan Zollman
Down 14 in the second half, Sauk Centre came back to defeat Milaca 53-51 Monday. They were continuing the blackout game from earlier this year when a power outage cut short their contest.
This was the Streeters first conference win on the season.

And for an encore after the game, senior guard/forward Bryce Hentges was crowned Snow Week King along with Streeter tennis star Leah Amundson, who was crowned queen.
