Sauk Centre girls' basketball wins Pierz tournament; boys' basketball late rally falls short at Little Falls

Against the host Little Falls Flyers, the Mainstreeters boys' basketball team lost 71-64 in the first round of a Holiday Tournament. Now 3-3 overall, they play Pequot Lakes (4-4) in the third-place game at 2:15 p.m on Saturday at Little Falls. The Patriots were soundly defeated by state-ranked Upsala 84-58 in the other semifinal game today.

Little Falls is 5-1 overall and one of three co-leaders in the Granite Ridge Conference who have 2-0 records.

At the Memorial Athletic Center in Pierz, the Mainstreeters girls' basketball team won 72-56 to continue their unbeaten start to the season. It was a huge win for the team, as Pierz (5-5, 1-2 Central Minnesota Conference) is a fellow Sub-Section 6AA-North member. Their next game is also a big match up, as they host Albany on Friday, Jan. 4. The Huskies are 8-1 overall (3-0 Granite Ridge) after beating St. Cloud Apollo 62-43 in a Christmas tournament at Little Falls today.

Albany will be one of Sauk Centre's top competitors for the sub-section crown next March.
