Streeters headed back to state!
Jena Klaphake with the set. |
Kendra Zenzen puts one past Annandale. |
Ashley Gruber and Macy Weller go up for a block. |
After going the distance against Albany and Little Falls to get through the sub-section playoffs, the Sauk Centre volleyball squad beat Annandale 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-16) to advance to their second consecutive state tournament.
While the matches against Albany and Little Falls were highly intense and close, this one was relatively anti-climactic. Sauk got out to an early lead in game one and never looked back. Annandale had some spurts of solid play, but the 26-4 Streeters were just too much for the 10-19 Cardinals.
After struggling with their serving and passing in their last two matches, Sauk looked solid in the section final. They were able to spread the ball around to numerous hitters. It wasn’t just Macy Weller and Krista Primus putting balls down…it was Ashley Kollman, Kendra Zenzen, Ashley Gruber, Brianna VonWahdle and many more taking their turns. Solid setting was provided by both Lexie Berscheit and Jena Klaphake.
Klaphake, along with Weller and Primus, were named to the All-Section squad after the game.
The win improves Sauk to 27-4 and puts them in position to make a run at a state title. Their first-round opponent is unknown at this point. They will play Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center at either 5 p.m. or 7 p.m.
Macy Weller was named to the all-section squad. |

Great run for Streeter boys
Terrence Ellis returns a punt during Friday night's contest. |
Zach Wolbeck gets ready to snap the ball to quarterback Patrick Knoblauch, |
Patrick Knoblauch tosses one downfield to an open receiver. The Streeters tried passing the ball after they were stifled on the run throughout Friday's game. |
Section 6AA Runner Up...not bad at all. |
Seniors Darin Bushard, Sam Fischer. and Cody Bartkowicz brought home some hardware. |
They believed and they DID achieve. After a 2-6 start, Sauk gave fans a reason to cheer. |
Pierz, on the other hand, was able to run the ball and their offensive line dominated in a 28-0 victory, sending Sauk on along bus ride home.
Yet, the Mainstreeter boys, left for dead after a 1-6 regular season, gave fans something to cheer for, and, the best thing there is in sports — hope.
For the seniors, it was a great way to end their career — advancing to a section final for the first time since 2004.
For the underclassmen, they were able to experience something that can only benefit them for next year...and the year after.
For all the kids in the stands, this season was one that sent a message of promise for years to come.
At the outset, with numbers stacked against them, the Streeters never gave up and never gave in. Despite playing against teams twice their size, they might have gotten worn down, but never quit.
Kudos to the coaching staff, for helping get the program back on the right track. This was an important building block, setting a solid foundation for the next several years.
The hope is we get better each year, take a step forward, keep progressing. We need more kids out for football, and hopefully those watching in the stands will realize the fun that can be had on the gridiron.

On second and 13, Pierz dropped back to pass, and the ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage and flew like a dead duck high in the air. Austin hauled it in for an interception at around the 35-yard line.
Sauk Centre had first down on the Pierz with about 1:30 left. They had a big loss on the play on a QB sack, and on 2nd-and-21, Austin carried for a big gain to the Mainstreeters' 49-yard line.
On 3rd-and-10 with 37 seconds left in the first half, Knoblauch dropped back to pass but the ball flew incomplete through the hands of Derek Holm. On fourth-and-10, the Mainstreeters elected to punt.
Austin's punt sailed down near the goal line, and Dylan Kohorst was Johnny-on-the-spot to down the ball at the Pierz one-yard line with 20 seconds left.
As expected, the Pioneers ran the ball twice and got zero yards. The end of the first half arrived. Pierz 14, Sauk Centre 0.

Hello Streeter fans and welcome to the Section Final game between the Sauk centre No. 7 seeded Mainstreeters (4-6) and the top-seeded Pierz Pioneers (9-1).
Both teams are coming into the section final with a chance to advance to the coveted state tournament where they will play the Section 7 winner Moose Lake-Willow River (11-0). They beat Cook County 48-0 in the section 7 finals Thursday night.
Tonight’s game will feature two teams who rely heavily on running the ball. Pierz, whose only loss of the year came to Sauk Centre’s neighbor Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 31-21 on Oct. 7 in Belgrade, has a lot of depth at the running back position. They most certainly are a run-first team and it will be interesting to see if Sauk Centre can stop them early and force them to change their game plan.
The Mainstreeters won’t be much different in regards to their game plan. They are led by a three-headed monster in the backfield – three players who can break a 75-yarder at anytime. Roosevelt Austin is the No. 1 back. He leads the team in yardage and touchdowns and if the Streeters continue to advance would have a chance at the single season touchdown record of 23.
Michael Knoblauch and Cody Bartkowicz are Sauk’s two other backs. Both average about 10 carries a game and have averaged close to 10 yards a carry in their first two playoff games.
Yes, the Streeters have run at will in their first two playoff wins — a 56-29 win over Osakis and a 48-0 win over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle — but may be a little more hard pressed to run against the Pioneers, who have a bit bigger defensive line and more athletic linebackers.
But that’s okay, because Sauk has a more than capable throwing quarterback in junior Patrick Knoblauch and two strong targets in Terrence Ellis and Derek Holm. Knoblauch has connected with Holm for big yardage plays twice in the two previous games, one for a score.
Not much is known about Pierz’s passing game because they haven’t had to throw the ball to win games.
There is also the variable of classes. Pierz plays a 2A schedule in the Central Minnesota Conference, while Sauk played a 3A schedule against the likes of Albany and New London-Spicer. What does this mean?
These are two good teams, both who will try to run the ball and stop the run. If both team sare able to run, expect a high scoring affair. If not, expect a lot of punts.
In any respect, it should be a great game…..stay tuned for a running play by play of the section final between the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters and the Pierz Pioneers.

(Herald video) Mainstreeters tie game four 24-24 against Little Falls
Video by Bryan Zollman
We hope to see a sea of Maroon at the Fargo Dome later today! Kickoff is at 5:30 p.m. for the football game.
Coming Saturday: a date with the Annandale Cardinals
The Annandale Cardinals are 10-19 overall heading into the section championship match.
Later this morning, a light scouting report will be posted here.
They were good enough to sweep St. Cloud Cathedral out of the playoffs. Any team that can do that is capable of doing some damage.
Stay tuned!

WOW! Sauk Centre wins in five games (again) to advance in the playoffs
Krista Primus knocks one past a Little Falls defender. |
The Streeters celebrate a point. |
Kendra Zenzen played well both in the back row and on the outside. |
The fans helped the Streeters' cause. In the end, Sauk would need a little magic to get past the Flyers. |
Coach Klaphaake rallies the troops. |
Primus with another kill. Her left thigh was taped up before the game but it didn't seem to bother her during the match. |
Sauk Centre won game one 25-16, and then they won game two as well.
Little Falls won the next two games to tie it up 2-2!
Game five was a back and forth effort between the two teams. Little Falls certainly had the momentum and for a while it looked as though the top-seeded Mainsreeters would get knocked off.
But a couple Little Falls miscues led to a 13-11 lead. After scoring the 14th point, Kendra Zenzen leapt high and hit hard for the game-winning kill.
Check back here tomorrow for photos and video of the big win.
Up next: on Saturday afternoon at St. Ben's University in St. Joseph at 2 p.m. the Mainstreeters face #4-seeded Annandale out of the east half of the section. The Cardinals knocked out #2-seeded St. Cloud Cathedral tonight in their sub-section title match.
Sauk celebrates another point. |
Jena Klaphake with the set as Ashley Gruber looks on. |
Ashley Kollman and Kendra Zenzen couldn't come up with an errant ball. |
Ashley Kollman with the tip. |
Jena Klaphake with the bump. |
Klaphake sets up Macy Weller for a big kill. |
The Streetrs left everything they had on the court, and now after two 5-game matches, will play for a return trip to state Saturday against Annandale. |

Fan Bus Scheduled for Friday's game
Please pass this along to ALL STREETER FANS!: SAUK CENTRE FOOTBALL TEAM IS PLAYING FRIDAY AT 5:30 in the FARGO DOME! COME ON OUT AND SUPPORT THE BOYS!
*If you are planning on taking the fan bus, please do not call Kevin Fischer at 612- 490-6712. All reservations have been changed to Rita at MN National Bank so they can watch the number. Even if you’ve left a message for Kevin you will need to call Rita.
Not the last, but the latest update. We have one bus that is full. We have a second bus that has 5 ppl signed up for. If we can get appx. a total of 35ppl for the second bus we will take two buses. The cost for each person will be $10.00. We need to know by 12:00 noon tomorrow (Wednesday) if we have enough for two buses. Previous deadline was 9am, however, with the 2nd bus we were able to extend it to noon. Please get the word out and when we have enough, Rita at Minnesota National will let me know and we will cut things off. Again, the cost is $10.00 and we would like to get another 30 ppl to sign up at Minnesota National Bank with Rita. The bus or buses will leave from Gerards parking lot at 2:15. The reason we changed to Gerards is that school is still in session and it will be quite congested around that area. Bus or buses leave Gerards at 2:15 Friday and arrive back appx. 10:15. Shirts are available thru Joyce Knoblauch.
1. It’s not too late to sign up for the Charter fan bus if needed. $10 per person. MN National Bank to sign up! Thank you to MN National Bank, First State Bank, Tim Kampsen Agency, John Wiese Ford and Main Street Realty for helping offset some of the costs. Also thanks to those businesses who supported the school so the kids fan bus could be reduced.
2. T-shirt order deadline is 3:00 Wednesday. They are $6. Please email orders to KnobbyOrders@Gmail.com. They are a 50/50 Gildan T-shirt. The design is attached.

It's MAGIC! What a wild night for the Mainstreeters volleyball team, as they defeat Albany in five games
A kill shot by Macy Weller and an ace block by Krista Primus gave the top-seeded Sauk Centre Mainstreeters volleyball team two straight points to win a crucial game four by a 26-24 margin over the Albany Huskies tonight in the Sub-Section 6AA-West semifinals.
The 4th-seeded Huskies took a 2-0 lead in games to put the Mainstreeters on their heels. In the must-win game three, the Mainstreeters built an early lead and led 20-17 at one point before taking the game to force a fourth set.
In game four, the Huskies jumped in front 4-0 before Kendra Zenzen hammered down a kill to put Sauk Centre on the board. The game was a grinder the rest of the way, with the first of many ties coming at 8-8. A kill by Albany's Samantha Schlangen erased a 13-12 Sauk Centre lead for a 13-13 tie. Albany went up 14-13 before hitting out of bounds to make a 14-14 tie. The Huskies then hit into the net to put Sauk Centre up 15-14. A tie followed at 16-16 before Weller earned a kill for a 17-16 lead. Albany led 20-19 before Jena Klaphake and Weller both hit kills, followed by a Huskies hit out of bounds for a Sauk Centre lead at 22-20. Albany called a timeout, and after that their imposing middle hitter Lisa Keppers earned a kill to make it a one point game. Weller and Albany's Amazih Eickhoff traded kills to make it 23-22. Another kill by Weller put Sauk Centre up 24-23 with game point, but the Huskies tied it at 24-24 before Sauk Centre took an incredible 26-24 win.
In game five, the Mainstreeters jumped out to leads of 7-2, 10-5 and 13-8 on their way to an incredible 15-12 win.
After Sauk Centre led 13-8 in game five, Albany's Keppers earned a kill to make it 13-9; the Mainstreeters hit out of bounds to make it 13-10; Keppers hit a kill to make it 13-11; Sauk Centre called a timeout; Weller hit a kill to make it 14-11; Weller was blocked to make it 14-12; and finally, Weller knocked down one last kill to give her team the fifth game and the match as well.
It marks the second time in a row that Sauk Centre has overcome a 0-2 deficit in games to Albany to win a five-game thriller this season.
Albany finishes another fine season 18-9 overall.
Sauk Centre (26-4) faces the winner of the late match tonight at Sauk Rapids, either Melrose Area or Little Falls.
More to follow shortly.

WHAT AN EFFORT! Mainstreeters dismantle Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 48-0 on the gridiron
...on Long Prairie's field no less.
What an incredible performance by the Mainstreeters football team in tonight's Section 6AA semifinal game against the higher-seeded Thunder.
No time to expand too much, but the Mainstreeters led 7-0 after one quarter, 27-0 at halftime and kept pouring it on into the second half. They led 48-0 heading into the 4th quarter.
Roosevelt Austin led the Mainstreeters with 179 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Up next: a date with #1-seeded Pierz next Friday night in the Fargo Dome with a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. Sauk Centre is 4-6 overall; Pierz is 9-1.
Fun fact: the Mainstreeters were the #7 seed at the beginning of the Section 6AA playoffs. From what I've seen on the statewide scoreboard, they are one of only two #7 seeds in the state who earned a section final appearance. Cloquet in Section 7AAA is the other one.
The last time Sauk Centre was in a section final in football was in 2004, when they lost to Staples-Motley in the Section 6AAA final and finished 9-2 overall. They tied Melrose Area for the West Central North Conference championship.
