Mainstreeters take first volleyball match at Sauk Rapids

The Mainstreeters volleyball team beat Kimball Area 25-8, 25-11 in the opening round of the Sauk Rapids-Rice tournament this morning. In the second round of pool play, they face Dassel-Cokato out of the Wright County Conference.

**Update: the Mainstreeters defeated Dassel-Cokato.

**Update again: the Mainstreeters made it all the way to the championship match, where they faced Melrose Area. In three games, they defeated the Dutchmen to win the tournament title.

Streeters fall hard to Morris

Morris scored on their first three possessions and then returned a fumble for a touchdown and a 27-0 lead as the Mainstreeters fell 41-8 in WCC South action Friday night.
The Streeters couldn't get anything going on offense and couldn't stop Morris' running game on defense as the Tigers ran over Sauk in a game that got out of hand early.
The Streeters were playing without all-conference running back Roosevelt Austin, who learned Friday he will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL. It happened on the second to last play last week against Montevideo. This is the second major knee injury he has had in less than a year. Last year he suffered a torn ACL on his other knee in the state wrestling tournament.
One of the most gifted runners Sauk Centre has ever had, he will certainly be missed in the backfield the rest of the season.
But even Austin's ability probably wouldn't have made much of a difference Friday night as a big and strong Morris squad simply manhandled the Streeters.
On  a positive note, junior linebacker Austin Landkamer forced and recovered two fumbles. Well, in reality he simply ripped the ball out of the ball carrier's hand twice. Also turning in a solid performance was junior wide receiver Josh Buschette. Buschette caught nine passes and was able to get some yards after his catches. He finished with 70 yards and also had some good punts. Senior QB Pat Knoblauch looked good, but didn't have much time to get rid of the ball. Knoblauch was 14-for-26 for 115 yards. He also converted with Seth Otte for a two-point conversion following a 27-yard touchdown run by Trent Berscheit. Berscheit and Landkamer split time in  he backfield in absence of Austin.
More than anything the defensive corp looked overmatched as they had trouble bringing down Morris' runners.
But there is always next week. Sauk will try and get back on the winning track as they travel to play BOLD. BOLD improved to 3-0 with a 43-8 win over Paynesville.
Sauk will play Paynesville Oct. 12 at home in the team's homecoming game, which was moved from its originally scheduled date of Sept. 28.

Game night! It's time for some football

One team will leave Big Cat Stadium in Morris tonight with their first loss of the season.

Granted, at 2-0 apiece, it's not that high of stakes...or maybe it is.

The 10-team West Central Conference brings an imbalanced schedule in football, meaning that one team just might run the table throughout and win the title outright. My bet is that team will be either Sauk Centre, BOLD or tonight's opponents for the Mainstreeters: Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta.

The MA/CA Tigers have 18 seniors on the roster, and they badly want to win a conference title and get to the Class 2A state tournament. They have three bruising running backs lining up behind senior quarterback Jake Torgerson. (He happens to be the son of long-time and highly-successful boys' basketball coach Mark Torgerson of Morris.)

On the other side of the line of scrimmage will be our very own Sauk Centre Mainstreeters, who are looking to erase memories of many seasons of sub-.500 football and post not only a winning record but also drive deep into the playoffs as they did in 2011.

Tip off is at 7 p.m. on the campus of the University of Minnesota-Morris. Highlights of the game will be posted late tonight with a follow-up tomorrow morning.

Streeter volleyball sweeps MA/CA

The Sauk Centre volleyball team continued its winning ways in the West Central Conference, as they swept Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta tonight in three games. The Mainstreeters are 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the WCC.

They now prepare for a tough field at the Sauk Rapids-Rice tournament on Saturday. Neighboring and section rival Melrose Area is there as well, and the two just may well meet up at some point in the day.

In girls' tennis action, the Mainstreeters lost on the road to state-ranked Melrose Area 7-0. Two matches went into a third set to decide an outcome - number one singles and number one doubles. The Dutchmen girls' tennis team is 11-2 overall and ranked ninth in the latest coaches' poll. Their losses have been to Osakis (#7 in Class A) and Class AA Alexandria.

In a West Central Conference girls' swimming dual, the Mainstreeters hosted Melrose Area and fell 114-72. Sauk Centre junior Tiana Molitor broke the pool record in the 200 freestyle.

At a cross country meet in New London-Spicer, the Mainstreeters boys' squad earned sixth place out of 14 teams with a score of 190. Holdingford won the boys' and girls' team titles.

Maren Greenwaldt led the Mainstreeters girls' team with an individual finish of seventh place and a time of 15:57.54.

Streeter volleyball serves notice in the West Central Conference

In the new one division West Central Conference, the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters are setting themselves up as favorites to win the volleyball title this year with three easy victories over Minnewaska, Benson and Paynesville early this season.
