With the second half about half ways gone, the Streeters girls basketball team built a 46-39 lead against the host NL-S Wildcats. At halftime, the Streeters trailed 32-28.
The first half started out well for Sauk Centre, as they bolted out to a 16-2 lead in the opening minutes.
Coming out of halftime, the Streeters went on a 10-1 run to regain the lead and never let up. Final score from New London: Sauk Centre 61, New London-Spicer 48.
Sauk Centre scoring: Krista Primus 2, Maren Greenwaldt 7, Emily Petermeier 11, Rebecca Macey 3, Cali Peschel 25, Macy Weller 7, Shelby Deters 6. The Streeters went 21-for-57 from the floor, 8-of-27 from three-point land, and 11-of-19 from the line. They out rebounded a brawny NL-S team 38-31.
The Wildcats went 18-for-56 from the floor, 6-of-19 from beyond the arc, and 6-of-12 from the line. The Streeters' defense was outstanding in the second half, holding NL-S to 6-of-25 shooting from the field.
Any way you cut it, the win is impressive for the Streeters, as they have broken the New London jinx in which they have lost at NL-S High School ("Fort Knox" as the Willmar-area radio announcers have dubbed it) in every trip there while NL-S has been members of the West Central North Conference. That goes back to at least the 2004-2005 season.
Up next for the Streeters girls basketball team: a home game next Tuesday against 5-5 Holdingford, who is also in Sub-Section 6AA-East.

In boys hockey action tonight, the Prairie Centre North Stars lost a battle with Section 6A rival Morris Area/Benson by a 4-2 margin. The North Stars host Mora/Hinckley-Finalyson next Tuesday night in Sauk Centre at 7:00pm. Two nights later, they host in Long Prairie.
**Don't forget, the Streeters boys basketball team will be in for one of its toughest games of the season when they travel to New London on Friday night this week. They'll face the 7-4 Wildcats in a conference battle. NL-S leads the WCCN with a 4-0 record, a half game ahead of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle (3-0). Albany sits in second place alone at 3-1, while the Streeters are 3-2 in the WCCN.
It's a huge sub-section game, and should the Streeters pull off the win it will not only give them confidence when meeting the Wildcats in their second meeting in Sauk Centre on February 25, but it'll help for playoff seeding as well. The game will test Sauk Centre's defense (giving up 49 points per game average, 2nd best in the league) against the Wildcats' high-powered offense (averaging 66 points per game so far this year, also second best in the league).
NL-S has won the last three conference titles, last year alone at 14-0, two years ago tied with Albany at 12-2, and three years ago alone at 14-0. They took second in 2006-2007 behind co-champions Melrose Area and Paynesville Area.
