Melrose prevailed Tuesday with a big second-half run to beat Sauk Centre in boys hoops.
Sauk led 26-25 at the half, but the Dutchmen went on a 15-2 run. The Streeters simply turned the ball over too many times and Melrose took advantage. The Streeters also played a good portion of the first half of the second half without Tyler Berling who ran into foul trouble.
A Michael Knoblauch "3" brought the Streeters to within six, trailing 47-41 and a baseline kisser off the glass by Bryce Hentges made it 48-43. Terrence Ellis brought the Streeters to within three when he came out of noweher to scoop up a rebound and put it back for a 48-45 score.
But Melrose's Cam Atkinson and Evan Reller hit both ends of their free throws and Jordan Primus sandwiched two-point baskets around a three-pointer to give Melrose a 60-48 lead with under six minutes to play.
That was enough as they held on for the 74-61 win.
Top scorers:
Sauk Centre: Hentges 19, Isaac Winters 15, Tyler Berling 11
Melrose: Reller 22, Primus 13, Carter Sawyer 12
