In the sub-section championship game at St. John's University, the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters girls' basketball team held a 26-16 halftime lead.
Early in the second half, though, top-seeded Staples-Motley made a run to cut the lead down to 26-22. Moments later the Cardinals hit a three-pointer and suddenly it's a one-point game.
**Update: with 5:51 left in the game, Staples-Motley has a 41-38 lead.
After regulation ended with the game tied at 44-44, the Mainstreeters ultimately prevailed in the extra session 54-48 to advance to their fourth straight Section 6AA championship game!!
The Cardinals were rated sixth in the state Class 2A polls. They finish the season 21-6 overall.
